The Alfred State College women's basketball team scored the final seven points in the contest as they defeated Mercyhurst North East 68-61 in a WNYAC match-up on Thursday.  The Lady Pioneers improve to 8-9 overall.

The Alfred State College women's basketball team scored the final seven points in the contest as they defeated Mercyhurst North East 68-61 in a WNYAC match-up on Thursday.  The Lady Pioneers improve to 8-9 overall.

Gina Moss (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) connected on a jumper from the corner to break a 61-61 tie with 54 seconds left.  Sherelle Brooks (Elmira Free) added to the lead by hitting 3 of 4 foul shots and Brittney Brooks (Elmira Free) hit a lay-up as time expired.

Brittney Brooks led all scorers with 21 points.  She added 11 rebounds, four assists, and four steals.  Sherelle Brooks finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, and five steals.  Kristin Abbott (Webster Thomas) finished with 11 points while Megan Coates (Nazareth) came off the bench and chipped in 10 points.

Carele Smith led the Saints with 14 points while Laruen Henry added 12. 

Mercyhurst North East trailed by six at half, 34-28, but hit eight out of their first nine shots to the take the lead.  The game was back and forth the rest of the way until the final minute of the game.  ASC held a 48 to 38 advantage on the boards.

ASC has a week off before they begin a five-game road trip next Thursday at Genesee CC.  Tip-off is at 6 p.m. in Batavia.
