Lady Pioneers Play Wild Doubleheader

The Alfred State softball team played in a wild doubleheader at Genesee CC on Thursday. Genesee used a big five-run 5th inning in the first game to race to a 13-5 victory. In the nightcap, the Lady Pioneers scored seven runs in the 6th to tie the game at 11-11 but lost in heartbreaking style 14-13 in nine innings.

The Alfred State softball team played in a wild doubleheader at Genesee CC on Thursday.  Genesee used a big five-run 5th inning in the first game to race to a 13-5 victory.  In the nightcap, the Lady Pioneers scored seven runs in the 6th to tie the game at 11-11 but lost in heartbreaking style 14-13 in nine innings.

In the opener, Alfred clawed back into the game and trailed 8-5 in the 5th but the Cougars ended the contest with a five-run 5th inning.  Kristen Potter (Northern Potter, PA) was 2 for 3 while Tara Scholla (Genesee Valley) was 2 for 4.  Alfred finished the contest with seven hits.

Once again the Pioneers fell behind in the nightcap but they used a seven-run 6th inning to tie the game.  Neither team could score in the 6th and 7th innings and both teams scored a single run in the 8th.  In the 9th, Alfred State plated one run but stranded runners on 2nd and 3rd.  GCC was able to tie it up and win the game in their half of the 9th to complete the sweep.

Reagan Ball (Hammondsport) was 3 for 4 with a RBI, Scholla was 3 for 6, and Shelby Freligh (Union Springs) was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.  Canisteo Greenwood grads Cora Murphy and Renee Stanford were each 2 for 5.

The blue & gold return to action on Sunday when they travel to Jefferson CC for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
