Lady Pioneers fall in season opener

The Alfred State College softball team couldn't overcome sloppy defense and fell in both halves of their season opening doubleheader in Myrtle Beach, SC.  The Lady Pioneers fell 11-0 to Mohawk Valley CC in the opener and then fell 8-4 to Northampton (PA) CC.

The Alfred State College softball team couldn't overcome sloppy defense and fell in both halves of their season opening doubleheader in Myrtle Beach, SC.  The Lady Pioneers fell 11-0 to Mohawk Valley CC in the opener and then fell 8-4 to Northampton (PA) CC.

Katherine McCarthy (Orchard Park) was 2 for 2 vs. Mohawk Valley while Bridgett Bachert (Horseheads) and Teresa Walker (Jamestown) each finished 1 for 2.

In the nightcap vs. Northampton, Lisa Simpson (Campbell Savona) was 2 for 2 to pace the offense while McCarthy collected two more hits in four at bats.  Walker was robbed of a two-run homer for the final out of the game.

Becky Simpson (Campbell Savona) tossed a complete game and eight allowed five hits, three earned runs, and struck out eight batters.

The Lady Pioneers continue playing at the Snowbird Softball Tournament on Tuesday with a 9:30 a.m. contest vs. Rochester (MN) CTC and an 11:30 a.m. battle with Southwestern (IA) CC.
