Lady Pioneers drop heartbreaker

Alfred State's 13 to 2 run in the final four minutes fell just short as the Lady Pioneers fell 55-54 to Lakeland (OH) CC on Sunday afternoon.  A-State trailed 53-41 with 3:55 remaining before going on their run to close within one.  ASC falls to 1-2 on the year while Lakeland improves to 4-0 (all wins versus WNYAC competition).

Alfred State's 13 to 2 run in the final four minutes fell just short as the Lady Pioneers fell 55-54 to Lakeland (OH) CC on Sunday afternoon.  A-State trailed 53-41 with 3:55 remaining before going on their run to close within one.  ASC falls to 1-2 on the year while Lakeland improves to 4-0 (all wins versus WNYAC competition).

The Lady Pioneers got the ball back with five seconds remaining after a Lakeland shot clock violation but couldn't get a shot off before the buzzer.

Ariana Williams led Lakeland with 14 points while Ashlee Spencer finished with 13 points and 19 rebounds.  The Lady Lakers shot 24.7% (19 for 77) from the field, 22.7% (5 for 22) from three, and 52.2% (12 for 23) from the line.

Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) and Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) each finished with double-doubles for the Lady Pioneers.  McLaughlin led all scorers with 17 points and added 12 rebounds while Smith had 14 points and grabbed 18 rebounds.  ASC shot 24.3% (18 for 74) from the field, 12.5% (2 for 16) from three, and 69.6% (16 for 23) from the line.  The Lady Pioneers held a 65 to 60 advantage on the boards.

The Blue and Gold return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Auburn for a 6 p.m. contest versus Cayuga CC.
