Lady Pioneers bring home Onondaga Title

The Alfred State College women's volleyball team was a perfect 7-0 (undefeated in 14 games) in winning the two-day Onondaga CC Tournament.  The Lady Pioneers, ranked #9 in the latest NJCAA Division III poll, have now won nine straight matches and are 17-2 on the season.

The Alfred State College women's volleyball team was a perfect 7-0 (undefeated in 14 games) in winning the two-day Onondaga CC Tournament.  The Lady Pioneers, ranked #9 in the latest NJCAA Division III poll, have now won nine straight matches and are 17-2 on the season.

After finishing pool play 4-0, A-State swept the championship series.  In the quarterfinals the Pios downed SUNY Delhi 30-13 & 30-11 to advance to the semis where they downed Onondaga CC 30-20 & 30-13.  In the finals the Blue and Gold defeated Jamestown CC, ranked #10 in the NJCAA Division III poll, 30-15 & 30-18.

Shannon Jablonski (Cheektowaga) registered eight kills, five digs, and four aces in the victory over Delhi.  Jenni Jerome (Syracuse/Westhill) had a .778 hitting percentage with seven kills while Brianne McMahon (Buffalo/Sweet Home) finished with seven kills (.600 hitting percentage), six digs, and five service aces.  Elaina Braun (Waterloo) continued her steady play with 26 assists.

McMahon connected on 12 kills and picked up six digs in the semifinal victory over Onondaga.  Jerome added six kills, seven digs and an ace, Georgia Buchholz (Andover) had six kills, four digs, and two blocks, and Jablonski finished with six digs, five kills, and three service aces.  Braun passed out 31 assists from her setter position.

In the finals, Alfred jumped on top of Jamestown 11-2 in the first game and led 18-4 and 21-6 before closing out the match 30-15.  In the second game knotted at 12-12, the Lady Pioneers went on a eight-point run en route to the 30-18 victory.

McMahon led the way with 15 digs, 11 kills, and two aces while Jerome finished with nine kills, five digs, and three blocks.  Jablonski registered 10 digs and nine kills while Braun passed out 27 assists.

Jerome, playing in her hometown, was named the Tournament MVP while Brianne McMahon and Shannon Jablonski each were named to the All-Tournament team.

Coach Gene Doorley was excited with his team's play over the weekend.  "This was the most focused and disciplined that we have played all season."

Alfred State returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Corning CC for a match-up with the Lady Red Barons at 6:30 p.m.  Corning was ranked #7 in the last NJCAA Division III poll and defeated ASC 2-1 in their first meeting of the year.
