Dr. Richard Kellogg, professor of
psychology at Alfred State College, is the author of a new book published by
Gryphon Books (www.gryphonbooks.com) of New York. Titled Vignettes of Sherlock Holmes, the book
is a collection of scholarly essays dealing with the great detective from a
variety of psychological, historical, and literary perspectives. The
author focuses on the cognitive processes of deduction, induction, memory, perception,
and creativity which are employed by Sherlock Holmes in his many criminal
investigations.

Several of the essays in the
anthology are related to literary rivals of Sherlock Holmes such as Inspector
Blunt, Uncle Abner, and Detective-Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte. Other
vignettes provide a fresh perspective on the real lives of such notables as
Franklin Roosevelt, Eliot Ness, Cesare Lombroso, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Robert
Ressler, and Allen Pinkerton. Readers will discover how the exploits of
Sherlock Holmes are correlated with the lives of many other individuals, both
actual and imaginary.

Dr. Kellogg has received grants
from the SUNY Research Foundation to develop instructional materials on
Sherlock Holmes and is the author of two previous books and numerous articles
about Sherlock Holmes and his colleague, Dr. John Watson. He joined the
Alfred State College faculty in 1970 after completing doctoral studies at the University of Rochester.
