Hoops for Haiti Charity Basketball Games Set for Wednesday

Alfred State will host a "Hoops for Haiti" charity basketball event on Wednesday, April 28th at the Orvis Activities Center.  The proceeds from this event will be donated the group of 21 students that will head to Haiti after the spring semester ends to assist in the rebuilding process.

Alfred State will host a "Hoops for Haiti" charity basketball event on Wednesday, April 28th at the Orvis Activities Center.  The proceeds from this event will be donated to the group of 21 students that will head to Haiti after the spring semester ends to assist in the rebuilding process.

The evening will feature two basketball games with the first game tipping-off at 6 p.m. and featuring the Pioneer athletic department taking on a team of student activities employees.  The two faculty/staff teams will then combine to take on the 2010 five-on-five intramural basketball champions at approximately 7 p.m.

In between halves and in between games their will be contests on the court for fans in attendance to win prizes.  Throughout the night a WETD DJ will be playing music and special performances by the Alfred Dance team and Alfred Steppas are planned.

Included in the 21 students headed to Haiti are two Pioneer student athletes, football player Kyle Covert (Wayland Cohocton) and soccer player Kennan Thayer (Middletown, RI).  Covert was 4 for 5 in PAT attempts in 2009 after registering 31 out of 37 attempts and 1 out of 2 field goal attempts in 2008.  Thayer registered five shots during his two season on the Pioneer soccer team.

Other members of the team heading to Haiti are Philip Murphy, Andrew Catlin, Elisabeth Elliot, Sydney Kraus-Malett, Emily Bailey, Melanie Scroger, Sean Schubmehl, Stacy Lord, Nicole White, Tiffany Schiffer, Menkaure Griffin, Randy Todd, Jenna Sonne, Jill Elston, Bryonna Alrect, Shannon Slocum, Kalem Chambliss, Brandi Sprout, and Meghan Snyder.

Organizers are suggesting a $2 donation to join the activities in the Orvis Activities Center.

This is the fourth charity basketball game that the athletic department has been a part of.  In the previous three games, $1,918.43 has been raised.
