Eleven Football Players Named All-Region

Eleven members of the Region III Champion Alfred State College football team have been named to the All-Region team.  Quarterback Greg Hampton (Uniondale) was named Offensive Player of the Year while Colter Johnson (Warren, PA) was named Special Teams Player of the Year.

Hampton passed for 1,682 yards and 19 scores on the season.  He was 113-235 and finished with 125.53 efficiency rate.  He also rushed for 81 yards and three scores.  He led an offense that averaged 28.2 points per game.  Hampton passed for over 200 yards in two contests and passed for a season high 299 yards in the victory over Hudson Valley CC.

Johnson handled both the punting and kicking duties for the Pioneers.  He averaged 38.9 yards per punt in his 38 attempts on the season.  He had six punts inside the 20, six punts of 50+ yards, and five touchbacks.  On kickoffs, he averaged 56.6 yards per kick.  Johnson was also 6 for 12 in field goal attempts including a perfect 4 for 4 in the Region III Championship game.  His long was 42 yards on the season.

Wide Receivers Devin Simmons (Elmira Free) and Tavon Moore (Syracuse/Bishop Grimes) were also honored. 

• Simmons pulled in 49 catches for 743 yards and 10 scores on the season.  His 49 catches on the season is a new school record.  Simmons had three 100-yard receiving games and four games in which he caught two touchdown passes.
• Moore caught 25 passes for 449 yards and four scores on the season.  Moore had a 100-yard receiving game vs. Hudson Valley CC.  He also rushed the ball 18 times for 58 yards.

Running back Desmond Goode (Johnson Mountain, VA) was also honored after having a solid season prior to having a season ending injury.  In six games, Goode rushed for a team high 628 yards and four scores.  After rushing for 85 yards in the first two games, he racked up four-straight 100-yard games including a 155 yards on 31 carries vs. Wright State Club.

Anthony Turner (Syracuse/Corcoran) led the defensive contingent named All-Region.  Turner led the team was 62 tackles (34 solo) and 10 sacks.  He recorded eight or more tackles in five games and recorded two or more sacks in four games.  He also forced four fumbles on the season.

Rory Spain (Tully), Antonio Williams (New Haven, CT), Robert Howard (Syracuse/Nottingham), David Howell (Rochester/Greece Athena), and Alonzo Joyner (Queens/Information Technology) were also honored by Region III.

• Spain had 56 tackles (19 solo) in eight games this season.  He was credited with two sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception.  He had eight or more tackles in four games this season.
• Williams finished the campaign with 40 tackles (19 solo) and six sacks.  He registered 12 tackles for a loss on the year.  He had eight or more tackles in two games and had three sacks in a victory over the Onondaga Ogres Football Club.
• Howard finished with 42 tackles on the season (15 solo) and two sackls.  He had six or more tackles in three games.
• Howell chipped in 47 tackles (19 solo) on the season.  He had 14 tackles for a loss including four sacks.  He had three games in which he had six or more tackles and recorded three sacks vs. Onondaga.
• Joyner finished the year with 50 tackles (34 solo).  He had three tackles for a loss, forced one fumble and led the team with five interceptions.  He also was credited with seven pass break-ups.  He had two key interceptions in the Region III Championship win vs. Erie CC.

The Pioneers wrapped up the 2011 season with a 6-4 overall and were crowned the Region III Champions after defeating Erie CC 26-20 in the championship game.  The Region III title was the first for the ASC football program.
