Gene Doorley, Alfred State College head volleyball coach, has been named the 2006 NJCAA Region III Division III coach of the year.  This honor was voted on by the coaches in Region III.

Doorley led his team to the best season in school history since ASC won the Region III Championship in 1977.  The Blue and Gold were ranked as high as #5 in the NJCAA Division III poll as they finished the campaign with a 32-3 record (30-2 in Region III Division III play).

Alfred began their season with 22 consecutive wins including tournament championships at Corning CC, Mohawk Valley CC, and Jefferson CC.  After suffering their first loss the Lady Pioneers bounced back to win the championship crown at the Alfred State Tournament.

For their outstanding play in the regular season A-State earned the #1 seed in the Region III Division III Tournament.  At Regionals the Blue and Gold went 3-0 in pool play and won their semifinal match to advance to the finals.  ASC missed going to the NJCAA Division III National Championship by two games as they fell 3-1 in the Regional Final.

Doorley is currently 70-49 (.588 winning percentage) in his four years as head coach of the volleyball program.  He has led ASC to three straight trips to the Region III Division III Tournament after the program had not made regionals since the early 1990s.
