Dairy Judging Team Competed in National Contests

Members of the Alfred State College Dairy Judging Team recently competed in two national contests: one in Harrisburg, PA, and one in Madison, WI. The team members include Stephen Gould, Pavilion, agricultural technology major; Kelsie Brennan, Wyoming, agricultural business major; Brittany Spencer, Perry, individual studies major; and Stephanie Spencer, Perry, agricultural technology major.

Members of the Alfred State College Dairy Judging Team recently competed in two national contests: one in Harrisburg, PA, and one in Madison, WI. The team members include Stephen Gould, Pavilion, Agriculture and Veterinary Technology Department.

The first competition, the 41st annual All-American Invitational Youth Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, held in conjunction with the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, saw the team ranking second overall of five teams and first-place in Oral Reasons.  The team also won the Holstein breed and the Guernsey breed awards. Gould was the Second High Individual Overall and First-Place Individual in Oral Reasons; Brittany Spencer was the Second-Place Individual in Oral Reasons; Stephanie Spencer was Third-Place Individual in Oral Reasons.

The All-American Dairy Show, the premier autumn dairy classic on the North American Continent, provides top-notch dairy contestants with an opportunity to match skills in a wide-open forum with hopefuls from throughout the United States and Canada. Contestants compete in four divisions, including Collegiate and Two-Year Junior College; each agricultural college is invited to enter one dairy cattle judging team, consisting of three or four members representing the agricultural college in which they are regularly enrolled.

The following week, the team competed against 17 of the country’s top post-secondary judging teams at the World Dairy Expo in Madison. The team enjoyed a repeat performance of second High Team Overall and first High Team Oral Reasons! The team placed first in the Jersey Breed, second in the Holstein Breed, third in the Ayrshire Breed, and fifth in the Red and White Holstein Breed. Brittany Spencer was second High Individual Oral Reasons, first-place Ayrshire Individual, 10th place Holstein Individual, and 11th place Individual Overall.  Stephanie Spencer was fourth-place High Individual Overall, fourth-place Ayrshire Individual, and seventh-place Jersey Individual. Gould was sixth High Individual Oral Reasons, sixth-place Individual Brown Swiss, third-place Individual Jersey, and 12th High Individual Overall. Brennan was sixth-place individual Guernsey, and ninth-place Individual Ayrshires.

As a result of their success and achievement, the team has been invited to attend the Royal Highland Show in Wales, Scotland, to compete for top post-secondary judging team in the world!

World Dairy Expo is an international trade and cattle show for dairy producers.  More than 65,000 dairy industry enthusiasts from around the world attend. Exhibits of the most modern dairy equipment and the newest in dairy technology and innovations, including animal health supplies, milking systems, feeding products, forage handling, and manure equipment are on display. More than 600 companies participate in 1,400 show booths in four different exhibit areas.
