Cross Country Compete Well at Houghton Invitational

The men's and women's cross country teams both competed well at the Highlander Invitational at Houghton College.  The men captured 3rd place out of eight teams while the women finished in 7th place.

The men's and women's cross country teams both competed well at the Highlander Invitational at Houghton College.  The men captured 3rd place out of eight teams while the women finished in 7th place.

On the men's side, John Sweeney (Barker) had the best time for the Pioneers finishing 11th (27:40.60) in the race of 83 runners.  Corey Smith (Wallkill) and Logan Drummer (Pioneer) also had top 25 finishes coming in 19th (28:16.10) and 24th (28:57.50) respectively.

The Highlander Invitational was a great test for the Pioneer runners as only one of the other eight competing teams came from a two-year college.  Houghton College captured the first place prize with a score of 19 after having five runners finish in the top six.  ASC scored a 98.  Other four year colleges competing were Ithaca College, Hobart College, Oswego State and Pitt-Bradford. 

On the women's side, Ashley Fung (Greenwich) was the top Alfred State runner finishing 12th (20:04.50) overall among 75 runners.  Colleen Hurtubise (Williamsville) finished 31st (21:14.20)while Kaleigh Ligoci (Cicero-North Syracuse) finished 45th (22:33.60).

The ASC women finished with a score of 164 trailing FLCC, the only other two-year school in the competition by 10 points.

The Alfred State cross country teams next compete at the Community College of Rhode Island on October 4.
