Alfred State College sophomore center Travis Brannen (Elmira Free) has been named the NJCAA Division II men's basketball player of the week and the Region III Male co-athlete of the week. Brannen is the first Pioneer basketball player to be honored by the NJCAA and the third Pioneer to be honored by Region III in the past three weeks.
Brannen scored 82 points in leading Alfred State to four wins. He posted 27 points, nine rebounds and three assists in an 82-70 win over Medaille JV on Feb. 1. One day later he scored 13 points with eight rebounds and four blocks in an 87-58 win over Ithaca JV. On Feb. 5 Brannen tallied 13 points with eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks in an 80-63 victory over Genesee CC. He finished the week with 16 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks in a 70-61 win over Niagara CCC on Feb. 7. For the week he shot 65 percent (32-49) from the field and 68 percent (15-22) from the free throw line.
For the year Brannen is averaging 14.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, and three blocks a game for the 13-10 Pioneers.
