The Alfred State College men's basketball team overcame a slow start and 23 turnovers to down Niagara County CC 72-68 in a WNYAC contest at the Orvis Activities Center on Thursday evening.  With the victory the Blue and Gold improve to 15-5 (4-1 WNYAC) on the season.

The Alfred State College men's basketball team overcame a slow start and 23 turnovers to down Niagara County CC 72-68 in a WNYAC contest at the Orvis Activities Center on Thursday evening.  With the victory the Blue and Gold improve to 15-5 (4-1 WNYAC) on the season.

Niagara jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game and led by as many as 12 points in the 1st half before the Pioneers rallied to tie the game at 32-32 at half.

The second half featured numerous lead changes and three ties.  Niagara led 64-60 with 3:44 remaining before Dusty Marshall (Newfield) keyed a 9-0 run by hitting his only three-pointer of the game.  Niagara cut the lead to 69-68 with just over 30 seconds remaining on a four point play by Darryl King Jr. but Cerrone Jackson (Forrest Hills) hit three of five foul shots in the closing seconds to ice the game.

Jerome Hall (Cicero North Syracuse), Dan Foley (Irondequoit), and Travis Brannen (Elmira Free) each finished with 12 points.  Hall recorded the double-double with 10 boards while Brannen collected eight boards.  Fran Lantigua (Jamestown) chipped in 11 off the bench while Jackson finished with 10 points and five assists.  The Pioneers got 25 points off of their bench on the day.

Shane Canahai led the Blazers with 18 points while Armando Rasario and Robert Linehart each finished with 15.

ASC shot 46.8% (29 for 62) from the field, 10% (1 for 10) from three, and 59.1% (13 for 22) from the line while NCCC shot 44.6% (25 for 56) from the field, 44.4% (8 for 18) from three, and 71.4% (10 for 14) from the line.  The Pioneers held a huge 56 to 21 advantage on the boards including 27 offensive rebounds.

The Pioneers head up 390 on Saturday for a match-up with Monroe CC.  Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
