The Alfred State College baseball team could not get the offense and dropped a pair to Mercyhurst North East, 2-1 and 3-0, in their 2011 fall season opener.  The Pioneers were a combined 2-20 in the doubleheader with runners on base.

Mercyhurst North East scored single runs in the 1st and 3rd innings and held off the Pioneers lone rally in the 5th.  Trailing 2-0, Brett Rapan (Bolivar Richburg) tripled home Eric Hicks (Equinunk, PA) to cut the lead in half.  MNE was able to record the next three outs and strand Rapan at third.

Ruben Mizrahi (Weston, FL) took the tough luck loss.  He tossed seven innings and allowed eight hits and one earned run.  He walked one and struck out four.

The Saints once again got on the board early with two unearned runs in the 1st inning.  The Pioneers threatened to tie the game in the 6th and had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out but was unable to score.  MNE added an insurance run in the 7th.

Garrett Hoag (Dansville) allowed just one hit and two unearned runs in four innings of work.  Stephen Golembiewski (Cattaraugus Little Valley) tossed two scoreless innings to keep the game close.  Jake Kenney (Alfred Almond) collected a double, one of the Pioneers five hits in the contest.

Alfred State has ten days off before heading to Niagara CCC on September 10 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with the Thunderwolves.
