Alfred State College recently hosted the Southern Tier Consortia for Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse Services. The Consortia is comprised of colleges,universities, and community prevention providers in the Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, and western portion of Steuben Counties.
Alfred State College recently hosted the Southern Tier Consortia for Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse Services. The Consortia is comprised of colleges,universities, and community prevention providers in the Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, and western portion of Steuben Counties.
This year marks the 25thanniversary of The NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services(OASAS) NYS College prevention program. An academic college manual, written and developed at Alfred State College, was transformed into a program manual which is still utilized today with periodic updates.
In 1990 the Statewide College Consortia Steering Committee, an oversight committee comprised of the co-chairs of the local regional consortia, was developed. Over the years, in conjunction with the steering committee and the regional consortia, OASAS has engaged in a number of statewide prevention initiatives targeting the 18- to 24-year-old college population including six statewide college prevention conferences and the development of the Healthy Campus Community Manual.
Frances M. Harding, associate commissioner, Division of Prevention and Recovery of the NYS OASAS, and Corinne Adams, addiction program specialist 2 of OASAS, attended the consortia meeting March 12, 2008. Harding thanked the attendees for their hard work in prevention efforts for their communities. Additionally, she spoke on the future of the OASAS office, including planning for future conferences, participating in core surveys, providing small grants to assist with prevention programming, and training opportunities.
Recognition and awards were presented. Judi Grant, RN, BC, AMNP, director of Health Services at Alfred State College, was recognized for 25 years of dedication to substance abuse prevention efforts. Alfred State College was also recognized for its affiliation and contribution over the past 25 years. Cattaraugus County Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse was recognized for its outstanding dedication and efforts as a community provider.
The Southern Tier Consortia meets twice a year to share ideas and information in the effort to eliminate alcohol and other substance abuse among college students.
