Alfred State College student Colleen Klein-Wolfanger, Silver Springs, an agricultural business major, was selected as the winner of the Monsanto Dairy Business and Northeast DairyBusiness Feature Article Competition, with her article about carbon offsets, which is scheduled to be published in the March issue of Northeast DairyBusiness Magazine.
The contest, which was open to undergraduate students at agricultural colleges and universities in the Northeast, required entries to consider dairy agricultural topics that related directly and explicitly to agriculture, agribusiness, or the social and scientific implications of advances and technologies in agriculture, specifically, how technology will play a role in dairy agriculture in the future.
Wolfanger's article, "Going...Going...Green! Opportunities to Generate Revenue by Trading Carbon Offsets," noted, in part, that, "Environmental issues are a hot topic these days and it's no wonder that with all types of industries being scrutinized for their impacts on the environment that dairy farmers are often uncomfortable when eyes turn in their direction. Dairy farmers will undoubtedly face an increasing number of environmental restrictions and regulations in the coming years due in part to the popularity of the green movement. Facing these challenges, however, is not without benefit. Opportunities to cash in on the global warming fight are emerging in the form of carbon offsets, which could be conveniently created right on your dairy!"
First prize in the contest was $800 and the publication of the article in Northeast DairyBusiness. Second and third prizes were $500 and $300, respectively.
Klein-Wolfanger, a Perry Central High School graduate, is the daughter of Stanley, (ASC class of 1975-general agriculture) and Michele Klein. Klein-Wolfanger works on her family's dairy farm in Silver Springs.
