39th Annual Finger Lakes Dairy Judging Contest for FFA Members

The Alfred State College (ASC) Agriculture and Horticulture Department and the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County will sponsor the 39th annual Finger Lakes Dairy Judging Contest for Future Farmers of America (FFA) members as well as for 4-H members from local counties at the ASC college farm Tuesday, July 8, 2008.

The Alfred State College (ASC) Agriculture and Horticulture Department and the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County will sponsor the 39th annual Finger Lakes Dairy Judging Contest for Future Farmers of America (FFA) members as well as for 4-H members from local counties at the ASC college farm Tuesday, July 8, 2008. Cost is $3 per person, and is due to Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County by Friday, June 27. Registration will be at 9:30 a.m. in the Livestock Pavilion and the contest will start at 10 a.m.

Contests are open to the following age categories (as of Jan. 1, 2008): novice (age 10 and under or 13 and under who have not previously competed in the Finger Lakes District Dairy Judging Contest), junior:  8-13 years old; and senior: 14-18 years old.

Four-six classes consisting of Holsteins and Colored Breeds will be judged on halter.  Questions will be asked on several classes.

The first-place individual in the senior division of both the 4-H and FFA contests will be offered a $250 scholarship to Alfred State College.  These scholarships are provided for students with plans to enroll in the veterinary technology, agriculture, or landscape design and construction programs at Alfred State. 

To ensure biosecurity of contestants' home farms as well as the Alfred State College Farm, every participant will need to wear disposable plastic boots when entering the Livestock Pavilion or any of the barns.  Contestants must provide their own boots.
