Alfred State staff were recently honored with Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Professional Service and Classified Service. Spencer Peavey was honored with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service and Roxanna Sammons was presented with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service. Each received a certificate and a medallion.

Spencer PeaveyPeavey, senior director of Student Engagement, has been an invaluable member of the campus community since 2006. As a senior director, his primary job responsibilities encompass student activities, Greek life, and orientation, yet he has always gone above and beyond these requirements, expanding his own role and taking on a leadership position in the team who envisioned, planned, and executed the programming for the new Student Development Center in the heart of campus. He has served as a mentor to others in his division and elsewhere on campus; is a regular presenter during Professional Development Week; and his active and committed involvement in a wide variety of national organizations has brought deserved recognition to Alfred State, his office, and the SUNY system. He is a recipient of the 2009 Outstanding Orientation Professional Award, and in 2010, his presentation on the use of social media to promote orientation activities won Showcase Honors and went on to represent the region at a national conference of orientation professionals. And this year, a proposal he wrote resulted in the siting of the 2014 Western New York Student Leadership Educators Conference at the Alfred State.

Roxanna SammonsSammons, secretary 2 in the Institutional Advancement Office, has consistently demonstrated unmatched performance within and beyond her position since 1992. Her skills and extensive service to the campus and to the State University, combined with her continued support of campus operations and programs are reflected in both her professional achievements and in the goals she has helped various departments reach over the years. Not only is she an organized, thoughtful employee, but she has reached out to and developed valuable friendships among alumni and supporters and is always comfortable meeting and speaking with them on behalf of the college. She has extensive knowledge of the college, budgets, and its events, and she supplies invaluable information and advice. She participates in major events, fundraising, and strategy sessions and always has valuable insight to add. Most importantly, she is always willing to lend a hand on any project in any department. In a phrase, Roxana “makes things happen” and her outstanding character has made many an alum or friend of the college feel welcome and appreciated.
