Student Insurance Plans
Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC)
A Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) is mandated by the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees for each SUNY campus. The committee‘s purpose is to advise Health Services on issues concerning the health and safety of the students attending Alfred State College. SHAC has played an integral part in the Health Fee proposals, mandatory versus optional health insurance offering, the development of a Health Service brochure and much more. Members are appointed by the college president or his/her designee. The director of Health Services is an ex officio member of the committee. Students interested in becoming members of the committee or wishing to express a concern to a member may contact Health Services for more information.
Student Health Insurance
An optional health insurance plan is available from Student Assurance Services. If you would like more information, or to purchase this insurance coverage, go to the Student Assurance Services website. Next, click on Find My School.
International Student Insurance is mandatory for all international students. The cost is included on the student's bill. There is a $100 deductible for care received outside of the Health Service. This deductible is waived if the care was the result of a referral by Health Service's staff or incurred as an emergency outside of the hours the Health Centers were open. When referrals are made, a health center staff member will verify the referral on the insurance claim form. After hours emergency visits will also be verified and the form appropriately stamped as such. These verifications will waive the deductible. Referrals not made by the Health Services or non emergencies will not be verified by the Health Center staff and the deductible will not be waived. Questions should be directed to the insurance company or the Health Center.
Liability Insurance- the college as a public institution does not carry liability insurance. Students participating in intercollegiate sports or incurring accidental injuries should have their own insurance coverage. Care received at Health Services is covered by the mandatory health fee and there are no further charges. Health Services does not accept insurances. Any expense incurred outside of the Health Service, i.e. X-rays, Emergency room visits, etc., is the student's responsibility for payment.
