Password security is an important part of Alfred State College's security. Passwords are always case-sensitive, which means a lower-case "a" is different from an upper-case "A". The minimum password length is eight characters. Also, it is recommended you use a mix of alphabetical, numeric, and symbol characters for your password. When you change your password, you can not use the same password you used the previous three times. This is called the password history, and ensures users create new passwords more frequently instead of "bouncing" between a few different passwords.

It depends on the student. For the most part, once the college bill is paid, most expenses are covered! Students have a safe, clean, comfortable place to live. Their food needs are, for the most part, addressed by their meal plan. Their entertainment is, for the most part, free.
There is no cost assessed; however, your Designated School Official must be notified in advance.
It all depends on the student how often they should go home. Residential Life recommends students stay on campus, especially on the weekend, as much as possible. College is a full-time job. For your student to succeed academically as well as socially, a tremendous amount of time must be committed. If your student is a four-and-one-half-day a week participant, leaving campus every weekend, there is no possibility of achieving the full college experience. That's a big loss from our perspective!
The school had its beginning in 1908 as the State School of Agriculture. It was incorporated into the State University of New York in 1948. However, most of the buildings have been constructed since 1960.

Building a community among students from every race, background, and belief system is a big task. RAs and CAs are very active in getting students involved in campus programming and services. That is the best interest for everyone.
First, we'll get both sides of the story. Please encourage your student to visit with the building Residence Director immediately. The RD is a professional staff person assigned to building operations. It's his/her job to see that our number one goal as a department, "the maintenance of a supportive education environment," is achieved. The RD will then speak with both parties, determine appropriate action, and recommend remedies. Your student's success is important to us, just like it is to you.

FERPA has been amended to allow campuses to share concerns relative to personal safety and/or significant alcohol or substance abuse issues with parents and Alfred State is very aggressive in incorporating you in the solutions phase of concerns of this nature.

The selection process that is used for your room assignment is completed through the online housing preference survey. The Office of Residential Life strives to place you in a location that reflects your survey responses. There is a period when students who wish to relocate can do so (based on space availability). This open room change period occurs for three days at the start of each semester. During this open room change period, students may move to any available space with the permission of the Resident Director (RD). At the completion of the open room change period, elective relocation ends.
Single rooms are reserved for upperclassmen. There are two buildings on campus that are single lifestyle - Robinson Champlin (R/C) Hall and Getman Hall. There are also a limited number of single rooms in the MacKenzie Complex.
Usually, college costs more than a student earns in a few extra days of work. There is an incredible amount of information that new students need to be made aware of. Orientation is the best way of getting this information to new students.
Please contact The Learning Center for information and to set up an appointment for placement testing.
All new and transfer students for fall semester will register for their classes during summer orientation. It is to the student's benefit to submit the $150 deposit as soon as possible. By doing so, he/she will secure a spot in his/her chosen major as well as in a residence hall. If a student submits the $150 deposit and then decides not to attend Alfred State, he/she has until May 1 to request, in writing a full refund.
Please check your homeowner’s insurance policy to verify if the student’s belongings are covered. The College recommends students obtain renters insurance if not covered under their parent’s policy.

We are making provisions for individual classes, fraternities, sororities, clubs, campus organizations, residence hall groups, department staff, college programs, etc. to be able to have bricks placed in clusters. Every gift does make a difference. Through the Annual Fund, even relatively small gifts can have a major impact. Just $25 can purchase a new library book or slides and Petri dishes for a chemistry lab. A $100 gift can help a student with needed books or tools. And when combined with hundreds or even thousands of other "small" gifts, the College can hire new faculty members, offer merit scholarships, or meet a host of other critical, ongoing needs.
There are a variety of scholarships available. A Financial Aid brochure is included in the acceptance folder. Information regarding any scholarship application procedures are outlined in the brochure. If an incoming student wants more information, he/she should contact the Admissions Office at (607) 587-4215 or 1-800-4-ALFRED.

The campus spending account is designed to give students an account to manage college expenses like books, supplies and special meals. CSA funds save time and hassle and can be spent at the Campus Stores, vending machines, dining facilities and with our campus partners. When you pay your bill, we recommend a CSA amount, but that amount can be completely deleted from your bill, or you can add to it. The minimum amount that can be added to the card is $10. The student photo ID card is swiped like a debit card when you make a purchase using CSA funds. As purchases are made, the account balance is reduced by that amount.
They are different for each building, as listed in residence hall details page.

Your earnings as a student employee are subject to all federal and state taxes so you must complete federal and New York State tax withholding forms (IT-2104 or an IT-2104-E) in order to be paid. In addition, to comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, ACES must verify, document and maintain a record of your eligibility to work in this country. As a result, you are required to complete an I‐9 form and present certain documents that will satisfy these requirements no later than three days after you are hired. Your driver license, Social Security card and birth certificate may be required for proof. According to the ASC Office for International Students, international students can work 20 hours per week when classes are in session. By immigration regulations, international students may not work off-campus. International students must go to the International Education Office to have their I‐20 endorsed for on-campus employment and must apply for a social security card before they start working.

All of the bricks will be maintained. If for some reason a brick should be damaged, it will be replaced at no cost to the individual who originally purchased the brick. If you wish to switch to a different major during your course of study and prior to applying for graduation, you can do so by processing a curriculum change form with both your current department chair and your anticipated department chair. There is no fee for this; however, check with the Financial Aid Office for possible ramifications on your aid. Also, per academic regulations, such changes must be processed by the end of the fourth week of classes for the current semester. Changes after the fourth week will be effective for the subsequent semester depending on the student's academic standing.
It is important to remember that communication is the key to an effective roommate relationship. If you and your roommate take the time to discuss any problems and work together to solve those problems, then you are off to a good start. However, sometimes difficulties may arise that need more attention. If this type of situation does occur, please seek assistance from your resident assistant (RA) or residence director (RD). Your RA and RD are trained to assist you and your roommate to solve any problems you may be having.
You will be able to drop a class during a semester per academic regulations and by dates on the academic calendar. Depending when the class is dropped, a fee may be charged and your financial aid may be affected. Contact the Financial Aid Office for further information.

Students may withdraw or take a leave of absence before the end of an academic term as long as they do so according to academic regulations and by the dates on the academic calendar. Contact your department representative to initiate this process. After 30 instructional days, grades of G (withdrew passing) or H (withdrew failing) will be issued for the semester. Should you have questions on how this will affect your aid, contact the Financial Aid Office or for questions regarding your bill, liability/refund, contact Student Accounts.

An endowment preserves capital, overcomes inflation, and provides long-term, reliable income to the College. For example, a $100,000 scholarship gift might be awarded to deserving students at $5,000 per year - meaning the scholarship fund will be depleted in 20 years. But if that $100,000 were used to establish an endowment, the gift would be invested and a portion of the earnings used to award scholarships. Another portion would be used to increase the principal and offset investment costs. The endowment would therefore continue to grow over time, supporting scholarships for as long as the College exists.

Like most other public universities, Alfred State College receives just a fraction of its revenues directly from state government. Federal and state dollars are sometimes allocated to specific projects or infrastructure needs. Tuition, which has failed to keep pace with inflation over the past decade, accounts for a small percentage of College revenues.
Alfred State College must rely on private donors to support the rest - everything from scholarships to faculty hiring and retention to equipment for classrooms and laboratories. When new buildings are built, state funds pay for the actual cost of construction - but not for the furnishings needed to bring those spaces to life. Gifts and endowments also enable a college to weather the inevitable "lean years," when budget cuts and competing priorities result in greater challenges for public institutions.
The computers are network certified and tested. The laptops at Alfred State College will all be attached to the network on campus to access campus-wide computing resources including the internet. Seneca Data will guarantee that the brand of laptops we recommend will function properly on the network. That same guarantee cannot be made with other models purchased outside of the college. If you purchase another brand, Alfred State College cannot guarantee it will work on the Alfred State College network.
The campus is actively upgrading the number of data ports available in student dorm rooms. When students connect their computer to the network, they will also have high-speed Internet access.
The campus is also equipped with a wireless network, which allows students Internet and network access using a laptop and wireless card. Wireless access is available in all campus buildings, including residence halls.
