In order for an applicant to change his or her major, he/she should contact the Admissions Office in writing to request a curriculum change. The application will then be reviewed, and the student will be notified of the decision. Continuing students who wish to change their majors must see their advisers and complete paperwork with the academic department chairs. Per academic regulations, such changes must be processed by the end of the fourth week of classes for the current semester. Changes after the fourth week will be effective for the subsequent semester depending on the student's academic standing.
Approximately one month before classes start, a letter will be sent to you indicating who your adviser is and where his/her office is located.

An endowment preserves capital, overcomes inflation, and provides long-term, reliable income to the College. For example, a $100,000 scholarship gift might be awarded to deserving students at $5,000 per year - meaning the scholarship fund will be depleted in 20 years. But if that $100,000 were used to establish an endowment, the gift would be invested and a portion of the earnings used to award scholarships. Another portion would be used to increase the principal and offset investment costs. The endowment would therefore continue to grow over time, supporting scholarships for as long as the College exists. A minimum of $10,000 is needed to establish an endowment.
Student and Exchange Visitor Information System- It is the tracking system used by the Bureau of Immigration and Customs and Enforcement under the Department of Homeland Security. Alfred State is located in the village of Alfred, New York, in rural western New York State. The village of Alfred is a small, safe town with a permanent population of 2,000 people. We are located in the foothills of the Alleghany Mountains in Alfred, New York. The community is peaceful and the people are very friendly and helpful to students. Another school, Alfred University, is also located in the village. The college is about 300 miles (482 kilometers) west of New York City, 90 miles (144 kilometers) southeast of Buffalo, New York, and 70 miles (112 kilometers) south of Rochester, New York. Learn more about the area.
The Alfred state athletic department has had great success in helping student-athletes continue thier collegiate athletic and academic careers. Former Alfred State student athletes have participated at the NCAA Division I, II, and III level and at NAIA institutions. Former athletes have played at Kansas University, the University of Arkansas, the University of Buffalo, and Delaware State University just to name a few. Former Alfred State College athletes have also played professional baseball, football, and competed in national road racing circuits.
Any student at Alfred State can be a part of an athletic team. Open tryouts are held in each sport, interested athletes should contact the coach of that sport. Vocational students and bachelor degree students are also eligible for participation for two years in each sport. There are academic eligibility guidelines that all student-athletes must meet.
Students attending classes on campus and taking six credit hours or more must have a health form on file at the Health Center. This includes a physical.
Every student pays a mandatory activities fee as part of the college bill. That payment creates a pool of funds used to sponsor club and organization activities. Over $ 525,000 a year is committed to providing fun, growth-oriented activities. Occasionally there is an extra cost for major programming, but for the most part, everything is already paid for from activities fees.
You must inform the International Student Services Office along with Residential Life to make arrangements.
The receptionist or nurse will greet you at the reception window and request that you fill out a short intake form. You will then be evaluated by a Registered Nurse.
Like most other public universities, Alfred State receives less than one-third of its revenues directly from state government. At times, federal and state dollars are allocated to specific projects or infrastructure needs. Tuition accounts for a small percentage of College revenues.
Alfred State must rely on private donations to support the remaining needs - everything from scholarships to faculty hiring and retention to equipment for classrooms and laboratories. When new buildings are built, state funds pay for the actual cost of construction - not for the furnishings needed to bring those spaces to life. Gifts and endowments provide financial strength to Alfred State.

Yes, designated singles are available in the MacKenzie Complex, Getman, and R/C Halls, and in our new townhouse complex on a first-come, first-served basis. The opportunity to have a single room is very slim, especially for freshmen. Residency in the townhouses is limited to continuing/returning students.
Based on observations, freshmen generally have a more positive experience when they have a roommate. There is an additional cost for singles. To be put on the list, you need to check the "single room" option when completing your online Residence Hall Preference Survey.

Password security is an important part of Alfred State's security. Passwords are always case-sensitive, which means a lower-case "a" is different from an upper-case "A". The minimum password length is eight characters. Also, your password must contain at least two of the following: alphabetical, numeric, and symbol characters. When you change your password, you can not use the same password you used the previous six times. This is called the password history, and ensures users create new passwords more frequently instead of "bouncing" between a few different passwords.

Approximately 55 international students study at Alfred State each semester. Currently, these students are from 10 countries. Alfred State has a total student population of 3,700 students. It all depends on the student how often they should go home. Residential Life recommends students stay on campus, especially on the weekend, as much as possible. College is a full-time job. For your student to succeed academically as well as socially, a tremendous amount of time must be committed. If your student is a four-and-one-half-day a week participant, leaving campus every weekend, there is no possibility of achieving the full college experience. That's a big loss from our perspective!

There are many things we can do. In addition to a professional coordinator, each of our residential facilities is staffed by student assistants, resident assistants and community assistants, whose primary responsibility is the development of community among their residents. Building a community among students from every race, background, and belief system is a big task. RAs and CAs are very active in getting students involved in campus programming and services. That is the best interest for everyone.

First, we'll get both sides of the story. Please encourage your student to visit with the building Residence Director immediately. The RD is a professional staff person assigned to building operations. It's his/her job to see that our number one goal as a department, "the maintenance of a supportive education environment," is achieved. The RD will then speak with both parties, determine appropriate action, and recommend remedies. Your student's success is important to us, just like it is to you.

Generally a parent is not notified. If your student is 18 years of age or older, a law called the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) prohibits colleges from sharing confidential information like grades and disciplinary status with parents. This is a general provision. FERPA has been amended to allow campuses to share concerns relative to personal safety and/or significant alcohol or substance abuse issues with parents and Alfred State is very aggressive in incorporating you in the solutions phase of concerns of this nature.

Usually, college costs more than a student earns in a few extra days of work. There is an incredible amount of information that new students need to be made aware of. Orientation is the best way of getting this information to new students. Also, one of the main components of the student's day will be to schedule classes.
Please contact The Learning Center for information and to set up an appointment for placement testing.

Any recent computer with Windows or Mac operating systems and a high speed Internet connection should enable students to use Blackboard’s features successfully. Cookies, Java, ActiveX, and pop-ups all need to be enabled in your Web browser. We have determined that wireless Internet connections are less reliable than hard-wired connections when using Blackboard and will cause problems during tests.
Typically, the latest versions of Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox are certified to be fully compatible with Blackboard’s features. (However, this is not always the case.) In addition, Blackboard has established support for use with Google Chrome and Apple Safari. The Web site below contains information on which browsers are best suited for using Blackboard.
Software requirements vary from course to course, but typically include media players, Adobe Flash, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Office or Microsoft Office file viewers. Many of these are free downloads available from their respective Web sites.
They are different for each building, as listed in residence hall details page.
The following student services offices are located in the Student Development Center:
Counseling Services - where students can go for help with academic stress, college adjustments, relationship conflict, drinking, drug abuse, depression, suicide, and adult problems. Both individual and group sessions are available. All counseling provided is strictly confidential.
The Learning Center (TLC) - provides students with peer tutoring services. These tutors meet with the student when it is mutually convenient. The peer tutors are students who have previously completed the course with a B average or better. Professional tutors are also available.
TLC assists both learning and physically disabled students. The staff can provide Braille books, taped books, and readers. Additional materials are available for deaf students.
Alfred State awards degrees in Associate in Applied Science (AAS), Associate in Occupational Studies (AOS), Associate in Science (AS), Associate in Arts (AA), Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Science (BS), and Bachelor of Technology (BTech). The campus is actively upgrading the number of data ports available in student dorm rooms. For rooms that still have one data port, a competitively priced switch can be purchased at the campus bookstore.
Most laptops will have built in wireless cards, so connecting to the campus network is not limited by the number of data ports in a room.
Visit the Learning Center. They'll put you in touch with a peer tutor. The best part is that tutoring services are FREE!
International students interested in being considered for admission should complete the four-part international student application. In addition to the completed application, official academic and financial documentation is required. Unless the student's native language is English, the TOEFL exam is also required. Results from the IELTS or STEP EIKEN exam may be substituted for the TOEFL exam. Entrance requirements vary by major, but most require a solid background in math and science.
Once completed application materials have arrived at Alfred State, a decision regarding admission will be made within two weeks.
If you wish to switch to a different major during your course of study and prior to applying for graduation, you can do so by processing a curriculum change form with both your current department chair and your anticipated department chair. There is no fee for this; however, check with the Student Records and Financial Services Office for possible ramifications on your financial aid. Also, per academic regulations, such changes must be processed by the end of the fourth week of classes for the current semester. Changes after the fourth week will be effective for the subsequent semester depending on the student's academic standing.
You will be able to drop a class during a semester per academic regulations and by dates on the academic calendar. Depending when the class is dropped, a fee may be charged and your financial aid may be affected. Contact the Student Records and Financial Services Office for further information.
Students may withdraw or take a leave of absence before the end of an academic term as long as they do so according to academic regulations and by the dates on the academic calendar. Contact your department representative to initiate this process. After 30 instructional days, grades of G (withdrew passing) or H (withdrew failing) will be issued for the semester. Should you have questions on how this will affect your financial aid, or for questions regarding your bill, liability/refund, contact the Student Records and Financial Services Office.

The campus is actively upgrading the number of data ports available in student dorm rooms. When students connect their computer to the network, they will also have high-speed Internet access.
The campus is also equipped with a wireless network, which allows students Internet and network access using a laptop and wireless card. Wireless access is available in all campus buildings, including residence halls.
Students may experience problems working in Blackboard if they have any pop-up blockers, firewalls, antivirus, and browser toolbars enabled on their computer. Students may not be able to click on test links or may have problems submitting tests or discussion items when pop-up blockers are enabled. Students may experience browser “freeze-ups” or unexpected “kick-outs” when third-party toolbars such as Google or Yahoo are installed on the student’s computer.
We recommend you add our Alfred State Blackboard Web sites below to a list of “trusted sites” using the tools menu of your browser, and set the security level to a lower setting. This will automatically enable many features in Blackboard to work smoothly. Be sure only trusted sites are added to this list.

While course listings are added to your Blackboard list by automatic data transfer from our Banner system, you can hide unused courses so they don’t appear in your list on the My Institution page. Start by moving your mouse over the upper right corner of the My Courses box until the gear icon appears, then click on it.

Next, uncheck the boxes beneath Course Name, Course ID, and Announcements of any courses you want to hide from your view. Then, click Submit at the top or bottom of the page.

Your courses are not really gone, just hidden from your list. You can reverse the process to make them reappear.
Students may have guests 17 years of age and older. Guests must check in at the residence hall office upon arrival and may only visit for three days within a 10-day period. Any guest under the age of 17 must be a family member and prior written permission must be provided by the parent/guardian of the minor. The Office of Residential Life also encourages conversations to occur with roommates before any guest arrives.
Yes! Effective April 1, 2010, a new policy went into effect that says:
Any veteran, as defined in section 360 of the New York State Education Law, in attendance as a student at the college shall be exempt from parking fees upon submission by the veteran of a written request for exemption together with written certification by the veteran that such veteran was honorably discharged or released under honorable circumstances from such service.
Yes. The $95 paid when obtaining a student permit covers two fees:
- $84 for parking fee which goes towards parking lot restoration, paving, and upgrades
- $11 for registration costs such as hang-tags, decals, registration booklets, and cost of temporary staff who help issue permits each year
No, the SkyDrive can currently only be accessed through the Web. You will have to access your SkyDrive at http://skydrive.live.com/.
If a student purchases an Apple laptop in a Windows required curriculum, it is the students responsibility for setting up Windows to run on a Mac.
Students may change their meal plan selection only during the first two weeks of the fall semester. After that, you can change your meal plan when you process your bill for the spring semester. Only new students who enter Alfred in January will have two weeks in the spring semester to modify their meal plan.
For students who are 18 and over, we must have the student's written consent each and every illness or incident which specifies who we may release information to. This is in compliance with HIPAA laws.
Our courses are designed so that you will not have to be physically present on campus at anytime to complete coursework. Generally speaking you will not have to access your course at any specific time. However, there will be deadline dates and times for assignments. Each course syllabus will address these deadline issues.
There are four breaks during the school year when the residence halls close. Fall break occurs during October, Thanksgiving break in late November, winter break in December, and spring break in March. Students are asked to leave campus during this time, with the exception of international and out-of-state students.
No, unless you are not returning for the spring semester. We do, however, ask that you take anything of value such as laptops, cash, video games, etc., home with you.
No, you do not need to create a new account, simply follow the instructions for logging into your live account using your Alfred State username.
No. The policy, as allowed by SUNY Policy 560.3, only extends to students.
No. The policy only allows veterans to receive the exemption and does not allow them to extend it to family members.
The bus schedule does not allow time for you to complete the orientation program including registering for your fall classes. If you are arriving by bus, it will be necessary for you to stay overnight an additional evening in order to be able to participate in the entire day's program. Please contact the Orientation Office by phone: (607) 587-3114 or e-mail: orientation@alfredstate.edu.
No. The student transportation fee is a separate fee not covered by this policy.
Yes. Although, keep in mind that your student permit is free of charge and temporary permits are already free for the first 24 hours. A request for a free week-long temporary permit would still require completion of the application for exemption and proof of honorable discharge or honorable release.
For the Fall semester, Meal plans can only be revised downward during the first two weeks of school. If you would like to increase your meal plan, you can do that at any time. When you process your bill for the Spring semester, you may select any meal plan at that time. Students who enter Alfred State as a new student or a transfer in the Spring semester have two weeks to change their meal plan selection.

If you are in need of enrollment verification (different than your academic transcript), you may complete and return the verification of enrollment form. Enrollment verification only provides date(s) of the term(s) the student attended or is attending, and will show whether or not the student was/is full-time or part-time.
If you would like to request a specific roommate, you will need to obtain that person’s Roommate Sharable ID (available from the Residential Life menu in BannerWeb) and enter it on the housing survey. You must also obtain your Sharable ID and give it to your roommate. To ensure placement with your requested roommate, your answers to some questions must match the answers of your requested roommate. See the Housing Preference Survey for more information.
The meal plan you choose depends on your eating habits and daily schedule. If you want three meals a day and plan to be on campus most of the time, the 18-meal plan would suit you. ACES recommends that freshmen select the 18 or 14-meal plan until they are comfortable with their options and schedule.
Remember, unused meals each week are not refundable or transferrable due to New York State tax law.
Select your meal plan when you pay your bill online. Or, go to the ACES Business Office, on the first floor of Central Dining Hall, during the first days of school to select a meal plan.
Beginning with any new registration occurring after April 1, 2010, veterans can request the exemption by doing two things:
- Submit a written request for the exemption to the Student Records and Financial Services Office or University Police.
- Provide adequate proof such as a copy of discharge or release papers that prove honorable discharge from service.
Through student announcements, a sign in University Police, our Web site, and word of mouth through other veterans. We are hopeful all veterans that are Alfred State students will take advantage of this courtesy.
You need not be affiliated with the college to use the facilities. If you need catering services for your event at the college, you must work with ACES' Catering Services.
If you are unable to log into Blackboard after your mailbox has been moved, you will need to first log into NetID and change your password, then login to Live.com before you will be able to log into Blackboard.
Each residence hall room is furnished with a twin bed and mattress (extra long), a dresser, desk, desk chair, and lighting (overhead or lamp). Please see the residence hall details page for room description and size.
No. This is a new policy added into Section IV. (B), effective at Alfred State as of April 1, 2010.
Yes, you can download the desktop client by navigating to http://explore.live.com/windows-live-mail?os=other and click the download button. Before parking registration begins for fall 2010 semester, a standard form will be created, approved, and available that will allow you to request the exemption without crafting your own letter.
You should check with the accepting institution to see if they will accept transfer credit.
The selection process that is used for your room assignment is completed through the online housing preference survey. The Office of Residential Life strives to place you in a location that reflects your survey responses. There is a period when students who wish to relocate can do so (based on space availability). This open room change period occurs for three days at the start of each semester. During this open room change period, students may move to any available space with the permission of the Resident Director (RD). At the completion of the open room change period, elective relocation ends.
Single rooms are reserved for upperclassmen. There are two buildings on campus that are single lifestyle - Robinson Champlin (R/C) Hall and Getman Hall. There are also a limited number of single rooms in the MacKenzie Complex.
Please check your homeowner’s insurance policy to verify if the student’s belongings are covered. The College recommends students obtain renters insurance if not covered under their parent’s policy.
Dining Dollars allow you to make prepared food purchases on-campus without having to pay taxes on those purchases.
Your SkyDrive can be used to store anything you would like, such as documents you would like to access from anywhere, files, and pictures. Each Student has a 25GB SkyDrive.
First year students may begin moving into their residence hall on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010 after 8:30 a.m. Orientation Part II begins Wednesday afternoon.
Microsoft’s Live@EDU is the new host for student e-mail accounts at Alfred State. Live@EDU is the type of account you will have, which will allow you access to certain resources. Having a Live@EDU account means you will have access to many Microsoft resources for free. You will have “cloud-based” storage for documents and pictures as well as access to programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote all right from the Web. However, having a Live@EDU account does not mean your e-mail address will change to Username@Live.edu, it will remain Username@alfredstate.edu.
New York State Education Law, Section 360, defines the term "veteran" as a member of the armed forces of the United States who served in such armed forces in time of war and who was honorably discharged or released under honorable circumstances from such service. Therefore, a student requesting the exemption must show a DD Form 214 indicating past, completed service. A student still actively serving is not yet a veteran. Alfred State interprets the law to include students who served active duty, were honorably discharged, and decided to continue reserve service as eligible for this exemption. The key document will be the DD Form 214 indicating past service resulting in honorable discharge or release.
It is important to remember that communication is the key to an effective roommate relationship. If you and your roommate take the time to discuss any problems and work together to solve those problems, then you are off to a good start. However, sometimes difficulties may arise that need more attention. If this type of situation does occur, please seek assistance from your resident assistant (RA) or residence director (RD). Your RA and RD are trained to assist you and your roommate to solve any problems you may be having.
If you forget your proof of honorable discharge or DD Form 214, you will still obtain the permit at University Police and the fee will be added onto your student bill. When you have your completed form requesting the exemption and have your proof of honorable discharge or release ready, you may bring those documents to the Student Records and Financial Services Office to have the fee removed from your bill.
You will be asked to provide medical documentation to our Office of Health Services. If approved, and space is available, we will do our best to provide you with appropriate accommodations. Please be aware that there is an additional charge for single room accommodations.
The Campus Spending Account (CSA) has many uses. It can be used to purchase anything you need at the Campus Store, it can be used at any on-campus dining location, and it also allows you to make purchases at Campus Partner locations -- all without having to carry cash. Campus fines or fees may also be paid using CSA.
Meal deals or value meals are pre-defined menu items at each on-campus dining facility. Check the menu boards at each location. Meal deals/value meals usually equal one swipe of your meal plan.

As of July 12, 2010 - Alfred State College e-mail is being hosted by Microsoft, which means all of the student e-mail accounts were migrated to Live@EDU. Your username will continue to be Username@alfredstate.edu. Your username will still be the first six characters of your last name, the first character in your first name and your middle initial (LLLLLLFM@alfredstate.edu).
E.g., if your name is John E. Smith, your e-mail address/username would be SmithJE@alfredstate.edu. If you do not have a middle initial, it would be SmithJ@alfredstate.edu.
Note: Your username might have a number appended to the end if there are other students with a similar name.
Each student will have both a SkyDrive and an N: Drive. The N: Drive is a local campus network storage that you can easily use on campus computers. The SkyDrive is only accessible through the Web, and the data is stored on Microsoft’s servers. The N: Drive is 2GB of space, while the SkyDrive is 25GB of storage space. The SkyDrive is ideal for large files and old archive folders/files.
Please refer to the guide to moving & packing page for a complete listing.
Blackboard usually has no impact on the printing problem being encountered. Instead, the document construction or formatting is the issue. In many cases, document features don't coincide with the normal default parameters of certain printers. In order to print the document successfully, save the document locally (on the computer desktop, for example), then edit the features or formatting of the document (margins, page size, etc.) to be within the acceptable defaults of the printer. Then send the “new” document to the printer.
Note that opening the document from within Blackboard may not allow the proper editing to be recognized "down the line." It is best to simply save it to the computer, then work with it.
Alfred State Student e-mail accounts are now being hosted by Microsoft’s Live@EDU service. Since e-mail is now being hosted by Microsoft you will get to a page similar to the Hotmail or Live account login page. Once you log in you will be taken to the Outlook Live inbox which is similar to Alfred State’s previous webmail inboxes. You will receive enterprise-class e-mail, calendar, tasks, and contacts. If you want to see what you should expect, please see this guide.
Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox are the recommended browsers. There have been some issues with Google Chrome so you will have to use that at your own risk.
Known issue with Google Chrome - Students have been able to view e-mail on the Web but not let you send e-mail from that account.
Users who have previously set up a Live.com account with their Alfred State e-mail address need to use an alternate e-mail address (e.g., Gmail, Hotmail, etc.) in order to maintain their Live.com account. The next time they log into Live.com it will prompt them to change their e-mail address.
First year student room assignments are made in June. You may access your housing assignment on BannerWeb after June 23, 2010.
Your room assignment and your roommate’s information will be mailed to you in June. It will also be available on BannerWeb. The Office of Residential Life encourages you to contact your roommate to arrange room set up and items you wish you bring.
USPS Mail is delivered Monday-Friday to each residence hall by 1 p.m. UPS and Fed Ex deliveries are picked up at the Document Center by the student (located behind Orvis) and signed for with student ID Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.

You can use your meal plan at any on-campus dining facility for any meal deal or value meal. A la carte purchases must be made with Dining Dollars or CSA funds.
The change is created because of a 2007 SUNY Policy, 560.3(c) 3, that allows our campus to exempt veterans from parking fees.
There are several reasons why you may not be able to login.
- If you do not put your e-mail address with the @Alfredstate.edu, it will not allow you to log in.
- i.e., SmithJR@alfredstate.edu will be allowed to log in, SmithJR will not.
- If your password has not been changed since the mailboxes were migrated to Live@EDU it will not allow you to login. Please refer the "Will My password be the same?" section of this guide.
- If your account is locked, please call the Alfred State Computer Help Desk at (607) 587-4357.
Meal plans make sense because it is a healthy, easy and economical way to eat when you are away at school. Meal plans at ASC are designed to fit your lifestyle and your taste buds all within easy walking distance.
Yes, any mail and calendar appointments you had in your old webmail account will be transferred to your new Live.com account.
Students will be able to add their e-mail to most smartphones. Please keep in mind that each phone works differently and that all phones may not support the e-mail feature. If your smartphone supports POP, IMAP, or Exchange, you should be able to add your -email to your smartphone. Please refer to the Live@EDU smartphones section in this guide to learn how.
The 1098T tax forms are mailed in January from Albany. You will not receive a 1098T if the total of your scholarships and grants (free aid) exceeds the total of your taxable college charges. Spring tuition bills are invoiced in November therefore the Spring taxable college charges will be included on the tax form for the year the bill was invoiced. Taxable college charges include tuition, college fee, activity fee, athletic fee, technology fee and transcript fee.
No. The College and the University Police Department will not automatically know that you are eligible. It is up to you to make the request for parking fee exemption and provide substantiating proof.
Please address this issue with your instructor.
Our meal plans are designed to fit different eating habits of individuals. The 18 meal per week plan is excellent for on-campus freshman and frequent diners. If a student goes home most weekends he/she may want to consider a nine meal per week plan. Students who eat frequently, but lightly, may choose a five meal per week plan with $500 in the declining balance portion. You can change your meal plan during the first two weeks of the Fall Semester. After that, the only time you can change your meal plan is when you process your bill for the Spring Semester. New students in the Spring Semester would have the first two weeks of the Spring Semester to change their meal plan.

Students should take tests carefully. To avoid losing a test, first close down the other programs running on the computer. Avoid distraction and focus only on the test until it is finished. Be careful not to close or even resize the window. Do not skip around the test and do not hit a key in error. Contact your professor immediately should you get locked out of a test.

Students can check which textbooks are needed after registering for fall courses but it is recommended that you get your textbooks after the first day of classes. Most students use their Campus Spending Account to acquire textbooks and supplies. This account does not become active until after academic registration.
No, students are expected to purchase their own tools and will need them at the beginning of the semester. Parents are encouraged to insure the tools through their homeowners insurance.
We recommend that you work on essay questions offline using a word processor such as Microsoft Word or Notepad. Save the file to disk and then use the copy and paste feature to copy the information to the Blackboard essay text box. Saving work that you will be posting online is a good idea (especially if your response is a long one) just in case there is a problem, and you get logged out without submitting the information. Many students have composed long answers online and lost all information upon submission. Students should periodically click the “save answers” button at the top or bottom of the page every five or 10 minutes.
The campus spending account is designed to give students an account to manage college expenses like books, supplies and special meals. CSA funds save time and hassle and can be spent at the Campus Stores, vending machines, dining facilities and with our campus partners. When you pay your bill, we recommend a CSA amount, but that amount can be completely deleted from your bill, or you can add to it. The minimum amount that can be added to the card is $10. The student photo ID card is swiped like a debit card when you make a purchase using CSA funds. As purchases are made, the account balance is reduced by that amount.

Some Internet connections may ‘time out’ your connection to the Internet if there is no activity coming from your machine - e.g., when you are composing an answer to an essay question or taking a test with many questions. This may cause Blackboard to freeze when you press "submit," or redirect you to the Bb login page, or you may get a blank screen rather than a score report and your answers are not recorded. Students should periodically click the “save answers” button at the top or bottom of the page every five or 10 minutes.
Some academic programs require you to have equipment, tools, supplies, and uniforms on the first day of class. Below you will find the requirements for each program listed.

Individuals may purchase as many bricks as they would like. The cost is the same for each brick purchased.
The Office of Institutional Advancement will assist in obtaining a photo of bricks for individuals and/or groups upon request.
There are a total of 25 characters available per line on a brick with a maximum of three lines. This includes the spaces between the letters or numbers.
If a group wishes to purchase bricks and have them laid together, please let us know and we will do everything we can to accommodate the request.
The text will be monitored for appropriateness, but there are very few limitations other than the number of letters available. The most common text is the individual’s name and his/her graduation year, but many are done as memorials or tribute to individuals, groups, or events as well.
All of the bricks will be maintained. If for some reason a brick should be damaged, it will be replaced at no cost to the individual who originally purchased the brick.
Because of security settings, you may encounter dialogs asking you to allow a blocked operation when you attempt to use certain features in Blackboard, such as online tests and when accessing uploaded files like Word documents or PowerPoints.

The yellow bar in the screen shot above alerts the user that an operation was blocked, and offers options to allow successful viewing. Websites at Alfred State, such as Blackboard, are deemed safe. This means you should allow the browser to override the blocked operation.
Depending on how your browser is configured, your experience may be different.
ActiveX is technology developed by Microsoft to add interactive features and applications to web pages. Because of ActiveX security issues, you may encounter dialogs asking you to activate it when you attempt to use certain features in Blackboard, such as online tests and typing into text boxes (i.e., fill in the blank questions). These dialogs are often shown in a yellow bar at the top or bottom of the screen.
Depending on how your browser is configured, your experience may be different. Firefox does not explicitly employ ActiveX control. Note that Internet Explorer allows you to add Blackboard to your list of trusted sites. Setting the security level to low for trusted sites will enable more automatic ActiveX control. Be sure only trusted sites are added to this list. Be sure to “uncheck” the box to allow non-https sites to be in the list.

On the Alfred campus, bricks are laid at the base of the Hinkle Memorial Bell Tower. Over time, this will be expanded and extended to cover all of the walkways and plazas throughout the Alfred Campus. On the Wellsville campus, bricks are laid in the Campus Courtyard, adjacent to the Administration building.
Bricks are available to anyone who is a friend of Alfred State. This includes, but is not limited to alumni, staff, administration, students, parents and family members, and friends who are interested in Alfred State.
