The Alfred State women's basketball team took home the top two honors at the Region III Division II Tournament. Haley Witchella (Oxford Academy) was named the RIII DII Player of the Year and Gina Boyd was named the Coach of the Year. Sophomores Camille Romero (Queens Village), Amie Brooks (Pavilion), and Nuri Bey (Bronx/HS of Computers & Technology) were also honored with spots on the All-Region team.
Witchella had a great freshman campaign in which she started in all 20 games she appeared in (missed seven games due to an injury in the 2011 portion of the season). She averaged 16.8 points per game and 11.4 rebounds for the 18-9 Lady Pioneers. She recorded eleven double-doubles on the year including a monster 34 points and 26 rebounds in a Lady Pioneer victory at Genesee CC. She scored more than 10 points in 18 of her 20 games and scored 20 or more in five games. She also chipped in 71 blocks, 35 steals, and 20 assists.
During Region III Division II play, Witchella led Alfred with a 16.5 ppg and 13 rpg. She shot a 45.3% from the field during Region games in which the Pioneers had a 7-4 record.
Boyd earns Coach of the Year honors for the sixth time in her 22-year coaching career after leading the Lady Pioneers to a 18-9 record and the #2 seed in the Region III Division II Tournament. Boyd helped the blue & gold to a 7-3 regular season mark in Region play and the team headed into the postseason riding a eight game winning streak. She has led her squad to the Regional Final Four in 17 of the last 19 years and currently has a 330-238 overall record in her tenure.
Romero and Brooks were named to the All-Region 2nd team.
- Romero started in all 27 of Alfred State's games and led the Pioneers with 468 points (17.3 ppg). Her 468 points is tied for 7th most in a season by any Lady Pioneer. She also grabbed 111 rebounds, passed out 93 assists, and had 67 steals. During region play, Romero averaged 14.8 ppg and 4.3 rpg. She scored more than 10 points in 24 of the team's 27 games and had 20 or more in 11 games. For her career she finishes with 734 points which ranks her 10th all-time. Romero was a 1st team All-Region selection following the 2010-11 season.
- Brooks also started in all 27 of the Lady Pioneers games this year and finished the campaign with 391 points, 86 rebounds, 80 steals, and 73 assists. Her 391 points is 18th best in a single season while her 741 career points puts her #9 in the career scoring records. During Region play she averaged 13.1 ppg and 3.2 rebounds. On the year she scored 10 or more in all but five games and had six games in which she netted 20. She had a career high 29 at Niagara CCC. Last season, Brooks was a 3rd team All-Region selection.
Bey was the Lady Pioneers 6th man and was named to the All-Region 3rd team. She appeared in all 27 games and was second on the team with 225 rebounds (8.3 average). She also netted 192 points (7.1 average). Her 225 rebounds is 22nd best in a season. In Regional play, Bey averaged 8.1 ppg and 9.2 rpg. She recorded six double-doubles on the season. She finishes her career with 504 rebounds.
