Genesee CC was able to take advantage of costly mistakes by Alfred State in the Western New York Athletic Conference Semifinals. The Cougars advanced to the finals with a 11-7 victory while ASC finishes the fall season with a 10-6 record.
The Pioneers got on the board first with two runs in the 1st inning but the Cougars answered right back with two of their own. Both teams scored a run in the 2nd but the Cougars took the lead for good with three runs in the 3rd inning. ASC cut the lead to 6-5 with two in the 4th but GCC added one run in the 4th, two in the 6th, and one in the 7th to make it 10-5. Alfred scored two in the 8th and had the bases loaded but could not get any closer. GCC added an insurance run in the 8th.
The Pioneers were out-hit 12 to 6 on the day. All six hits were singles and Bryan Lance (Chenango Forks) was the lone Pio with two hits. Derek Speaker (Starpoint) finished 1 for 3 with 2 RBI while Kevin Underhill (Somers) and Adalberto Vargas (Norman Thomas) each were 1 for 4 with a RBI.
Dominick Garcia led the 12-hit attack for Genesee with a 3 for 5 day while Chris Page, Chad Blackman and Nate Parrino all finished with two hits. Jason Kirkum tossed the final five innings of the contest to earn the win.
Andrew Foster (Clarkson, ONT.) took the loss for the Pioneers.
The Blue and Gold will open up the Spring campaign in mid-March when they travel to Cocoa, FL for their annual spring training trip.
