The #9 ranked Alfred State College volleyball team downed #7 ranked Corning CC in a five game back and forth match 3-2. With the win the Lady Pioneers have now won ten straight matches and improve to 18-2 on the year while Corning CC falls to 12-4.
The Lady Pioneers got off to a fast start winning the first two games, 30-24 & 30-25, but the Red Barons rallied to win the next two, 33-31 & 30-21, to force a deciding fifth game. A-State re-grouped and won the final game 16-14.
Brianne McMahon (Buffalo/Sweet Home) led ASC with 22 digs and 18 kills while Jenni Jerome (Syracuse/Westhill) finished with 14 kills and 9 blocks (8 solo). Shannon Jablonski (Cheektowaga) finished with 18 digs, 13 kills, and three aces, Natalie Gregory (Iroquois) chipped in 21 digs, and Georgia Buchholz (Andover) added 10 kills and four blocks. Elaina Braun (Waterloo) passed out 58 assists from her setter position.
The Pioneers and the Red Barons have now split a pair of matches thus far and will most likely meet again in the upcoming weekends at the Alfred State Tournament and the Corning CC Tournament.
The Blue and Gold will enjoy a rare weekend off before returning to action on Tuesday when they take on WNYAC rival Jamestown CC. Action is set for a 6 p.m. start at the Physical Education Building at JCC.
