Commencement exercises will be held at noon on Sunday, May 18, 2014, outdoors at Pioneer Stadium on the Alfred State campus.
The day of Commencement exercises, live streaming broadcast of the ceremony will be provided at web.alfredstate.edu/video .
Packets can be picked up from the Campus Store after April 7 during regular business hours. Anyone who cannot pick up their packet in person must call the Campus Store at 607-587-4020 to make other arrangements. Packets contain a graduation gown, cap, and tassel; a photo card; notices about the ceremony; and four guest admittance tickets which are for four guests to use in the event that the ceremony is moved inside due to inclement weather. While at the Campus Store, interested graduates can also order graduation announcements for sharing news of their achievement with family and friends.
Should inclement weather or some other safety concern arise, the outdoor Commencement ceremony at Pioneer Stadium will be moved inside to the McLane Center on the Alfred University campus. If such a move becomes necessary, a determination will be made by Tuesday, May 13 and communicated to students and the local media.
If the ceremony is moved to the McLane Center, the number of guests per graduate will be limited to four. These guests will need a ticket to be admitted. No one will be admitted to the indoor ceremony without a guest ticket. ‘Inclement Weather’ guest tickets are contained in the graduation packet. Please have them with you the day of the event.
Parking at the McLane Center is prohibited, except for handicapped parking. Overflow handicapped parking is available on the Alfred State campus.
About the Ceremony
Pioneer Stadium is our outdoor venue for Commencement exercises. This stadium provides a wonderful view of the ceremony for all attending and is large enough to comfortably accommodate several guests per graduate. Guests will not need tickets to be admitted. Stadium seating is available on a ‘first come, first seated’ basis and guests are permitted to bring lawn chairs into the stadium if they desire. Commencement exercises begin promptly at 12 noon and will last approximately two-and-a-half hours. A reception for your academic school will take place immediately afterwards in the following location:
- School of Applied Technology - The Terrace Dining Room
- School of Architecture, Management and Engineering Technology - The Student Leadership Center, Park Space
- School of Arts and Sciences - Student Gathering Place, 1st Floor
Light refreshments will be served and graduates and guests will have a relaxed and comfortable place to gather, congratulate graduates, and take photos. The day of Commencement exercises, Alfred State will provide live streaming broadcast of the ceremony at web.alfredstate.edu/video .
Guest admission begins at 11:30 a.m. Parking and seating for guests with disabilities (including wheelchairs) is available (see ‘Traffic Procedures’ ). Any guests who require special seating accommodations should contact Melanie Ryan at 607-587-4122 by May 16.
Students should arrive no later than 11:15 a.m. with academic regalia. Students will assemble in the end zone of Pioneer field where they will look for a sign indicating their area/school. Prospective honor students should look for their names to be posted on a “sandwich” board in the end zone and should also be sure to get an honor cord from the Honor Marshal who will have a listing of the honor students. All graduating students will be seated for the ceremony by academic area. If the ceremony is moved to an inside location, students will be directed where to line up.
Each graduate’s name is announced as he/she crosses the stage which is why it is extremely important that graduates complete and bring the photograph card (from the graduation packet) with them. When their area is called forward, graduates will hand the card to the name reader on stage. Each graduate will have three professional photographs taken including one with the president of Alfred State which will be taken before exiting the stage. These photos will be available to order through Grad Images (see flyer in graduation packet).
Graduating students are expected to dress professionally for this prestigious ceremony. Try on your academic gown to check for size as soon as you pick it up. Please iron your gown prior to Commencement. Do not wear jewelry, flowers, or any other adornments not approved per the academic regalia policy.
- Men should wear dark slacks and dress shoes
- Women should wear dress shoes
- Please do not wear jeans, sweats, shorts, casual sandals, or sneakers
The mortarboard (Commencement cap) should be worn with the tassel to the right. After the College Council members authorize the awarding of degrees in your school, the name reader invites the students to come forward for recognition. Be sure to keep the tassel on the right. After all candidates have walked across the stage, graduates will be inducted into the Alumni Council and the tassels will then be moved to the left. This tradition signifies the conferment of the degree. Men should remove their mortarboards during the National Anthem, the invocation, and the benediction.
The May 18 event is a ceremony to recognize graduation. Attending the ceremony does not signify that you have, in fact, successfully completed all requirements; unfortunately, some will go through the ceremony, but not be recommended for graduation by the faculty as they have not met all graduation requirements. Those participating in the ceremony will only receive a diploma cover at the event. The actual diploma will be mailed in mid-July.
