Vice President for Student Affairs
Gregory Sammons, vice president for student affairs, joined the Alfred State staff in 1996. Appointed as chief of police in 2005, Sammons assumed duties as the vice president for student affairs in January 2013.
Sammons holds an Associate in Applied Science degree in criminal justice from Finger Lakes Community College, a Bachelor of Science degree in organizational management from Houghton College, and a Master of Justice Administration degree from Norwich University. Sammons is a graduate of both Session XV of the SUNY Academy held at the New York State Police Academy in Albany and also the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Academy in Corning.
Sammons was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service in 2012. He was elected to the SUNY Police Chief’s Association Executive Board in 2007, where he currently serves as president. Sammons holds professional affiliations with the International Association of Chiefs of Police and International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. He serves locally on the Board of Directors for the Hornell Area Humane Society and has served as both a certified police instructor at the Rural Police Training Academy in Batavia, NY, and as an adjunct faculty member at Alfred State.
With expertise in emergency management, Sammons led critical college crisis management initiatives in addition to leading the police department, including chairing the college’s Emergency Response Planning Team, coordinating the college’s Emergency Response Plan and emergency procedure training programs for members of the campus community, leading successful grant initiatives resulting in implementation of new emergency equipment and technology, and creating a training program later used by other SUNY institutions. Sammons’ passion has resulted in coordinating and leading past college disaster relief trips to locations such as Biloxi, MS, and Minot, ND.
