Intramural Rules: Team Handball

  1. Seven players per team.
  2. Two 15 minute halves with a 2 minute rest period at halftime.
  3. A coin flip determines which team gets the ball to start the game.
  4. The game starts with a pass to a teammate at center line.
  5. An offensive player may only hold the ball for 3 seconds.
  6. An offensive player may only take 3 steps without dribbling.
  7. Double dribble is a violation.
  8. An offensive player may only enter the goal area while in the air; ball must exit hand before landing.  Hitting on the line or inside is a line violation.
  9. Corner throw ins occur when the ball is touched last by a defensive player (excluding the goalie) and goes over the end line.
  10. Defensive player can block opponent similar to basketball
  11. Defensive player can only enter the goal area in the air.
  12. Defensive player must be 10 feet back on throw ins.

Penalties

  1. Minor violations result in a free throw from the spot of the foul without the official intervening.  It must be passed within 3 seconds and you can score directly.  Free throws near the goalline will be taken 10 feet beyond the goal area line.
  2. Major violations such as a player having an excellent chance at scoring and being fouled result in a penalty throw.  The shot will be taken 6 feet inside the goal area line.  Any player can take the throw, all other players must be 10 feet behind the goal area line.
  3. A player committing a major penalty will be given a warning.  After this, any player getting a major penalty will result in a 2 minute penalty.  Any player receiving a third 2 minute penalty will be disqualified.  Any player that is disqualified will also sit out the next contest.

Goalie

  1. The goalie may not leave the goal area with the ball under control.  Goalie may leave to get a ball, but cannot bring it back into the goal area.
  2. Players may not throw the ball back to their keeper within the goal area.  This results in a penalty throw.
  3. Any balls which the goalie deflects that go beyond the goal line result in the keeper having a throw in.
