A new era of Alfred State College athletics is on the verge of a beginning with the opening of the college's brand new on-campus athletic complex. The construction of the project was spearheaded by two Pioneer alums, Doug Acomb and Andy Smilinich of Babcock Enterprises Ltd.
Acomb has worked at Babcock since 1980 and became a president/co-owner of the company in 1994. Acomb graduated from Alfred State in 1978 with a degree in Civil Engineering Technology.
Smilinich currently serves as a project manager and estimator for Babcock. He has been with the company the past eight years. He received a degree of technology in Construction Management in 2000 from Alfred State.
The new lighted athletic complex at Alfred State features a field-turf playing surface which will be the new home of Pioneer football, soccer, and lacrosse. It will also allow the football program to play its first ever on-campus home game in 2008. The complex also features an eight lane track that will be used by the track and field team. The 2008 Region III Championships and the 2009 NJCAA Division III National Championships are already scheduled to be held in Alfred.
Kathy Feldman, director of athletics at Alfred State, had high praise for the work done. "It was a pleasure to work with Babcock Enterprise LTD. The workers were very professional, pleasant and informative. They were very thoughtful and thorough in completing the numerous phases of this job. The result of their efforts is a beautiful athletic complex that will be a highlight of the campus."
Marshelle Gillette, Director of Facilities Services, appreciates the hard work that Acomb and Smilinich put into this project.
"Doug provided great on-site, as well as behind the scenes support for all that has been accomplished. Andy has gone above and beyond in his responsiveness and commitment to campus needs, as well as sharing his expertise in preparing, planning and completing those projects. He is committed to excellence in his management of our projects. We truly appreciate their assistance and support in moving Alfred State College forward."
Babcock Enterprises is no stranger to working on the Alfred campus prior to this project. They have replaced the exterior stairs of MacKenzie Hall and built new stairs at the Central Dining Hall. They have also done concrete work around Main Gate A, the Campus Store, and the Hinkle Library. Babcock has also put in the campus sidewalks around the Townhouse Complex and has done various blacktop repairs around the campus.
The complex will be officially opened in the Spring of 2008 with the start of lacrosse and track and field competition. Plans are being made for a grand opening event most likely to take place during a football game in the Fall of 2008.
