In addition to the regular college expenses, students entering the Automotive Trades programs must possess hand tools and uniforms. The cost of the required tools and tool box for the freshman year varies vastly depending on brand and place of purchase, but typical range is between $2,000 and $5,500. For the second year, the costs are considerably less. In addition, the total cost for textbooks, safety shoes, and uniforms is about $1,800 for the two-year period. It is recommended that all tools and equipment be insured under the parents' or the student's homeowner's insurance.
Some instruction cannot be given on live vehicles, thus students who have been accepted into the motorsports technology program will be required to furnish bench units. These units such as carburetors, alternators, starters, and tandem master cylinders may be purchased at an approximate cost of $20-$200*. Students will receive information about the identification and purchase/attainment of bench units from individual course instructors after arriving on campus.
Some of the required supply items that students accepted into the motorsports technology program need to furnish are not on the equipment lists. These items, such as welding rods, brake fluid, oils, etc., must be of a particular type and should not be purchased prior to arrival on campus. Again, after arriving on campus, students will receive information about the identification and purchase/attainment from individual course instructors at an approximate cost of $150* for the school year.
Students are required to have a valid driver’s license and a vehicle that can be used to perform lab practices on. Some students practice on the vehicles that they drive every day, while others purchase inexpensive project vehicles (approximately $500 to $1,500) to do their required lab projects on. It is not necessary that the vehicle be licensed or insured and there is parking provided for these vehicles. If a student is unable to provide such a vehicle, he/she should contact his/her academic adviser upon arrival to campus.
Project vehicle requirements: since the purpose of the vehicle is to provide as much real-life, hands-on experience as possible, the vehicle should be a relatively common vehicle (e.g., Ford, GM, or Chrysler). Each student has a required list of lab projects that need to be completed throughout each course. Usually (not always) the healthier and more common the project vehicle is, the easier and more beneficial it is to complete the lab projects. A newer vehicle will enable the student to get hands-on experience on later technology. The following is a list of reasons the project vehicle should be relatively healthy and common:
- Reference material is usually more accurate and readily available for common vehicles.
- Sometimes special tools are required to complete the lab projects that are more readily available for common vehicles.
- Many of the lab projects require that the vehicle run and/or be drivable to complete them. Example: the cylinder evaluation requirement/lab project used in one of the labs requires the student do a compression test on an engine. It would not be possible to do that lab project on a vehicle if the starter did not function properly.
- Power windows and locks are highly recommended.
Ample parking is allowed on campus for registered student vehicles. Parking lots are maintained and patrolled by University Police staff. Student dead lots are not maintained or patrolled by University Police. Student parking permits are available through the University Police at registration or in the Student Services Office on the Wellsville Campus after registration.

Uniform work pants are to be black in color (example - Dickie brand) and five (5) pairpai are recommended (minimum of three pair). These are not available at the Campus Bookstore but can be purchased at most retail stores (i.e., Wal-mart, K-mart, Sears, JC Penney).

All tools must meet O.S.H.A. standards. Prescription glasses are okay if confirmed by a statement from your optometrist. Bring this statement at the start of school.
