The Pesticide Stewardship Alliance

The Pesticide Stewardship Alliance (TPSA) was founded in 2000 as an organization of federal, state and local governmental agencies, educational and research institutions, public organizations, private corporations and individuals involved in many aspects of pesticide stewardship. TPSA has become the new Mecca for professionals working to recover value from used agricultural plastics. The organization initially focused on recycling of plastic pesticide containers, enhancing the pesticide industry's public image. Today TPSA is looking to include other agricultural plastic items that may have pesticide residues on them, including items PERCEIVED to contain pesticide residues.

Cornell University Waste Management Institute

As part of the Cornell Waste Management Institute, the Environmental Risk Analysis Program (ERAP) and Recycling Agricultural Plastics Project (RAPP), both spearheaded by Lois Levitan, are superior resources for information on current regional and national programs to recover value from discarded plastics. Their electronic database on “Who’s doing what where?” is outstanding.

The American Society for Horticultural Science

ASHS has recently embraced the American Society for Plasticulture (ASP) as a working group within. The ASP Working Group strives to improve the economic efficiency of horticultural systems (specifically) and agricultural systems (generally) through the use of plastics. This includes plastics in various aspects of plant and animal production, manufacturing, packaging, and distribution; and through environmentally sound recovery and reuse. This is accomplished by promoting plastics science and technology, by providing a forum for the exchange of plasticulture ideas and information, and by encouraging innovation.

The Recycling Markets Center (RMC) serves as the lead clearinghouse for recycling market development in Pennsylvania. Their mission is to expand and develop secure, robust markets for recycled materials by helping to overcome market barriers and inefficiencies. The RMC aims to:

• Build successful new businesses using recycled materials
• Develop markets for products containing recycled materials
• Buy and sell recycled and recyclable materials
