Certified Wine Expert®

The Certified Wine Expert Program prepares students who are aspiring to break into the wine, hospitality, or food service industry or want to advance their career in wine. This comprehensive 120-hour wine-study program offers students the prerequisite knowledge beneficial for working in wine retail, wholesale, production, service, and hospitality careers. This course includes important information to help students understand wine, to be able to speak confidently with others about wine, and to decide which career path to choose. Classes are conducted online as an instructor-led self-study program and can be completed at the student’s desired pace.

What You Will Learn

This course provides students with essential information to understand where and how wine is made, how to serve, taste, and pair wine with foods, as well as critical insight into wine career opportunities. Course lessons include Wine History & World Wine Regions, Winemaking Processes, Old World & New World Wines (a “deep-dive” look at nearly 30 wine regions), Wine Types & Styles, Classic Grape Varieties, Vineyard Basics, Wine Tasting, Wine & Food Pairing, Wine Aroma & Sensory Evaluation, Serving Wines, Hosting Wine Events, and Wine Career Opportunities.

Employment Outlook

The wine, food service, and hospitality industries are always looking for talented and knowledgeable professionals. The number of jobs at wine retailers, distributors and wineries has steadily increased over the past year and has shown growth over the past two years by as much as 50% to 90% in some areas. Job openings are expected to be abundant through 2018, which will create excellent opportunities for jobseekers. As the economy continues to improve the demand for high-end wait staff, wine stewards and sommeliers is expected to increase.

Who Should Attend

This is an intensive self-study program geared towards motivated students wanting to enter the wine, hospitality, or food service industry with a solid foundation in understanding wine and a deeper appreciation for wine.

Eligibility Requirements

Students should have command of the English language in order to complete written assignments. Students need to have an Internet connection to access the online course, submit assignments, and complete certification testing online.

Special Features

The Certified Wine Expert Program offers students the opportunity to interact with wine industry professionals by conducting interviews and participating in interactive assignments. Certified Wine Expert® training and certification program has been approved for 100 continuing education hours (CEHs) by the American Culinary Federation as part of their development of the knowledge and skills directly related to the individual’s professional occupation.

Certificate Requirements

A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the program.

Cost

The cost of the program is $2,295 which includes the cost of materials.
