Humane Society

The animal care courses at Alfred State College in collaboration with the Humane Society University are designed for paraprofessionals in the animal care industry or for people interested in improving their knowledge about animals. The courses are taught in an online classroom which can be accessed anytime and anywhere! Courses are on an open enrollment basis, which means registered students begin class once their textbooks are ordered and received. Tuition for each course is $130.

Veterinary Medical Terminology

Veterinary medical terminology is an Internet-based course geared to help those interested in the animal health care field become more familiar with medical terminology and its proper usage. This 12-week course will cover extensive medical terminology including directional and anatomical vocabulary. A strong comprehension of medical prefixes and suffixes will be emphasized to enable the student to develop an understanding of common medical terms. Proper terminology in regards to medical conditions, both normal and abnormal, will be covered for common domestic large and small animals, as well as some exotic animals.

Small Animal Anatomy and Physiology

Small animal anatomy and physiology is designed to be an introductory course for those individuals interested in understanding basic concepts of animal structure and function. The 18-week course will cover information beginning at the cellular level and expanding to include the body systems. At the completion of this course, students will have an understanding of anatomical terminology and the basis of how the body systems work together to keep the animal alive.

The Mechanism of Disease in Companion Animals - Nature, Nurture, or Bugs?

This six-week course is designed to introduce the student to the many disease-producing factors in animals, give them an appreciation of the animal's resiliency toward disease, an understanding of how they fight back, and an understanding of how we can assist them in the process.
