Recognizing that many undecided students enter college not yet ready to lock-in their major, Alfred State offers support through career development, counseling, and four distinct paths that allow students to explore their options.
If trying to choose your major has you down, chin up. Recent studies by the Education Advisory Board (EAB) indicate that students who take their time choosing a major and those changing majors may be more engaged, satisfied, and by their senior year, more eager to graduate and start their careers.
Recognizing the need to explore, Alfred State offers these options:
- One Year: Starting your first year of college in our Undeclared Major could be a great choice. Through this program, you may explore options during the first two semesters before entering a degree-granting program.
- Two Years: By choosing our Individual Studies AS degree, students may explore options for the first two years to gain an associate degree, and then continue into a four-year degree.
- By completing an Associate in Arts (AA) or Associate in Science (AS) liberal arts degree program, you are fulfilling the first two years of a bachelor's degree. Your credits are fully transferrable, and you have time to explore career options through your elective course selection.
- Four Years: Another way to navigate your educational exploration is with our Interdisciplinary Studies BTech program. While completing specific core and concentration areas, this bachelor’s degree allows students freedom to personalize their studies throughout their college years.
