Commencement 2009Nearly 900 two- and
four-year graduates, their families, professors, and friends were on hand
Sunday, May 17, as Alfred State College honored its 98th graduating
class.  Dr. John M. Anderson, college president, presided over the
ceremony.   One of the highlights of the ceremony is the presentation
of the Paul B. Orvis Award for Excellence, presented to the outstanding
two-year graduates in each of the college's schools of study, as well as to a
baccalaureate graduate. The award, which honors Paul B. Orvis, a former
president of Alfred State and State University of New York dean for two-year
colleges, is a glass bowl.  Recipients must meet four criteria:  service,
leadership, character, and scholarship.  Faculty, staff, and fellow
students appraise the first three.  Scholarship is determined by an
analysis of the student's academic standing in comparison to other students in
the academic area.  Dr. Ronald R. Rosati, provost and vice president for
academic affairs, presented the Award. Stanislav Sajin, Republic of Moldova,
who received his business administration degree at the ceremony, was selected
as the recipient from the School of Management and Engineering Technology,
associate degree level.  While at Alfred State College, Sajin captured one
of the top five scores in the NYSMAT math contest; received an International
Excellence Scholarship, the Robert Woods Freshman Writing Comp Scholarship, is
a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, was on the Dean's List, served as an
Tor Echo (school newspaper) staff
writer, a resident assistant at the MacKenzie South residence hall, and served
as a tutor and proctor in the Math and Writing labs.
