Alfred State College athletes are back on campus preparing to begin play in 2008. The men's and women's basketball teams, the wrestling team, and the swimming team began practicing on Sunday while the Indoor Track & Field team returns to campus on Thursday.
Alfred State College sophomore forward Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) has been named the Region III Female Athlete of the Week. Smith had double-doubles in both of the Lady Pioneers victories this past week.
The Alfred State College women's basketball team wrapped up the the 2007 portion with a hard fought 78-71 victory over SUNY Orange. The Lady Pioneers have three straight and eight of their last nine and are 9-3 on the year.
Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) led all scorers with 18 points and grabbed a career high 26 rebounds as Alfred State downed Finger Lakes CC 78-72. A-State improves to 8-3 on the year while FLCC falls to 9-3.
For the second time in eight days the Alfred State College women's basketball team won a tight contest versus Dean College. On Sunday afternoon in Franklin, MA the Lady Pioneers improved to 7-3 on the year with a 79-70 victory.
The Alfred State College women's basketball team hung tough with #18 CC of Rhode Island but the Lady Knights used a strong second half en route to a 69-50 victory. The Lady Pioneers five game winning streak was snapped and the team sits at 6-3 on the season while CCRI improves to 6-2.
The Alfred State College women's basketball team repeated as the champion of the Alfred State Tournament with a hard fought 63-53 victory over Dean (MA) College. With the win the Lady Pioneers have won five straight and improve to 6-2 on the season.
The Alfred State College women's basketball team started the contest on a 23-0 and eased to a 89-40 victory over Jefferson CC in their opening round contest of the 4th annual Alfred State Tournament. The Lady Pioneers advance to the finals on Saturday and will take on Dean College at 2 p.m.
For the fourth year in a row Alfred State College will host both a men's and women's basketball touranment. This year's tournament begins on November 30 and wraps up on December 2.
