at the school's annual recognition luncheon. Faculty and staff members
who retired this year include,
Four members
of Alfred State College's staff were honored with the SUNY (State University of
New York) Chancellor's Award for Excellence this spring. Those so honored
were Gary Moore, Geneseo, staff associate, Athletics, Excellence in
Professional Service; Cyril (Skip) Merrick, Belmont, associate professor
and chair,

Smiles and tears mingled Wednesday evening as Alfred State College
President Dr. John M. Anderson hosted a reception to bid farewell to
the two Chinese students hosted by the College and SUNY (State
University of New York) as part of the SUNY China 150 initiative.
The
Alfred State College BUV Team overcame enormous adversity and achieved a
second-place finish in the Ninth Annual National Basic Utility Vehicle
Competition.
The
Alfred State SUNY College of Technology recently held its annual Showmanship
Day on campus. A total of 69 animals from five different species were
exhibited. The judges overseeing the showmanship contest this year were
livestock judge, Jeff Wilson of Dansville, who placed the classes of sheep,
goats, horses, and alpacas. Dairy judge Stacy Andersen of Lebanon, PA, placed
the cow and heifer classes.
Now more than ever, given rising tuition costs and a tight economy, academic scholarships to high-achieving students entering the engineering field play an important support role for the recipients. This year, 16 students in New York State colleges and universities received American Council of Engineering Companies of New York scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $5,000.
Dr. Richard Kellogg, professor of psychology at Alfred State College, is the author of an article appearing in the most recent issue of Paperback Parade, a quarterly magazine published by Gryphon Books of Brooklyn. Titled "Philip Wylie's Final Dream," the article notes that author Philip Wylie (1902-1971) was writing about global warming, contamination of our air and water, and the grave risks of nuclear power long before these issues reached public consciousness.
