There may be snow on the ground and a nip in the air, but the cropping season is well underway at Alfred State College. Thanks to new greenhouse and lighting technologies, the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Technology, located in the central Southern Tier, is growing vegetables year-round.
Getting nutritious, tasty, fresh, and appealing meals on the table every day at the Alfred State College campus is a challenging affair. It means developing recipes, planning menus, locating and ordering large quantities of foodstuffs, preparing the food, and serving it to customers at the right temperature - all while maintaining the quality and safety of the food.
Smiles were the order du jour as Alfred State College officials, students, and contractors cut the ribbon at the new Student Gathering Place at the Central Dining Hall on the Alfred campus late last month.
The third week of classes began to feel a whole lot more like normal for Alfred State students and the ACES team as one of the dining hall serving lines opened for the first time since last spring's kitchen fire.
Alfred State College employees brought their children to the workplace during the annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work® Day, April 26. Employees were invited to bring not only daughters and sons, but also grandchildren, nieces, and nephews between the ages of nine and 15.
