Volleyball Finishes 4-1 at Alfred State Invite

The Alfred State volleyball team opened up their 2012 season with an impressive day at the Alfred State Invitational. The hosts won their first four matches but fell in the tournament final to Butler CCC 25-17, 25-23.

The Alfred State volleyball team opened up their 2012 season with an impressive day at the Alfred State Invitational.  The hosts won their first four matches but fell in the tournament final to Butler CCC 25-17, 25-23.


The Pioneers didn't drop a match in pool play.  They defeated Baltimore City CC 25-19, 25-8, Butler 25-19, 25-11, and Herkimer CCC 25-17, 25-19 to earn the top spot in Pool.  In the semifinals they downed Nassau CC 25-13, 25-17 to set up a rematch with Butler.  Butler was able to hold off the Lady Pioneers to capture their second straight Alfred State Tournament title.


Alfred was led by All-Tournament selections Kay Pfleghardt (Tioga) and Lera Braun (Waterloo).  Pfleghardt finished the day with 40 kills, 13 digs, and 11 service aces while Braun had 74 assists, 21 digs, and 11 kills.  Sarah Linn (Portville) chipped in 17 kills, Jessica Ramsey (Tioga) had 28 digs, and Kristen Badeau (Hornell) had 12 digs.


Butler's Christina Farmer was named the tournament MVP and was joined by teammates Jessica Prelec and Julia Kleinfelder on the all-tournament team.  Nassau's Patricia Murphy was also selected to the all-tournament team.


The blue & gold return to action on Tuesday when they open WNYAC play at Genesee CC.  Play is slated to begin at 6 p.m. in Batavia.
