Track Starts Fast in Outdoor Opener

The Alfred State College outdoor track and field team finally got their 2008 season started in the sunshine at the University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon.  The Pioneers put together some impressive performances in their season opener.

The Alfred State College outdoor track and field team finally got their 2008 season started in the sunshine at the University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon.  The Pioneers put together some impressive performances in their season opener.

Andy Omoregie (Gates Chili) won the 110 hurdles (15.49), finished 2nd in the long jump (6.44 m), and 3rd in the high jump (1.86 m) to pace the men's team while Najia McGee (Rochester/Edison) finised 2nd in both the 100 (12.77) and the 200 (26.16) on the women's side.

Zak Williamson (Rocky Point) finished 2nd in the 5,000 (15:47.75) while Dan Fabiny (Wellsville) finished 3rd in the 100 (11.40) and 4th in the 200 (22.89).

The women's 4 x 100 relay team of McGee, Reaghan Bulckley (Avoca), Caitlin Peterson (Wayne), and Callie Ayers (Letchworth) finished 5th with a run of 51.35.  Ayers also finished 12th in the 400 (64.78) and 11th in the 800 (2:31.08) while Peterson finished 20th in the 200 (28.32).

Jen Chan (Genesee Valley) finished 5th in the 10,000 (46:44.12) while teammate Rachel Shellman (Honeoye Falls Lima) finsished 6th (51:07.12).  Kaleigh Ligoci (Cicero North Syracuse) finished 28th tin the 1,500 (5:38.03).

Alex Curran (Williamson) finished 6th in the pole vault (3.95 m) while Dan Reynolds (Wayland Cohocton) finished 8th (3.80 m.).  Ryan Jenerson (Rochester/Edison) finished 8th in the triple jump (11.84) and Nathan Smith (Clymer) was 10th in the hammer throw (39.71 m).

The Pioneers had two prior meets (Hagerstown CC and a home quad meet with Alfred University, Finger Lakes CC, and Erie CC) cancelled due snowy and cold weather.

The Blue and Gold return to action on Thursday when they compete at the Houghton College Invitational beginning at 3 p.m.
