Swim team Impresses in Season Opener

The Alfred State College swimming team opened up the 2007-08 season in impressive style with a strong showing at the Genesee CC Harvest Invitational.  The men's team finished 1st out of five teams while the women finished 4th out of six teams.

The Alfred State College swimming team opened up the 2007-08 season in impressive style with a strong showing at the Genesee CC Harvest Invitational.  The men's team finished 1st out of five teams while the women finished 4th out of six teams.

Alex Newell (Binghamton) won the 200 free (1:57.04) and finished 2nd in the 500 free (5:20.67) to pace the men's team while Phillip Valenta (Maine Endwell) won the 100 breaststroke (1:10.91) and finished 4th in the 200 IM (2:21.54).

Paul Congdon (Bath) finished 2nd in the 50 free (24.80) and 5th in the 100 butterfly (1:03.31).  Brett Kozlowski (N. Tonawanda) finished 2nd in the 1000 freestyle (11:26.49) and 3rd in the 100 backstroke (1:05.83).

Tim Goodrich (Iroquois) was 3rd in the 200 free (2:11.64) and 4th in the 100 backstroke (1:07.28), Sean Valvano (Newark) was 3rd in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.91) and 4th in the 200 free (2:15.07), Kevin Minderlein (Salesianum) finished 4th in the 500 free (6:05.85), and Brett Au (N. Tonawanda) finished 4th in the 50 free (26.35).

The men's 200 yard free relay team of Congdon, Au, Kozlowski, and Newell won with a time of 1:38.81 and the 200 medley relay team of Newell, Valvano, Congdon, and Kozlowski finished 2nd (1:50.13).

On the women's side, Kaitlyn Corbett (Clarence) won the 100 free (1:01.68) and was 2nd in the 50 free (27.27) and the 100 backstroke (1:10.85) while  Becca Mastasio (Livonia) won the 200 free (2:17.10) and finished 2nd in both the 100 free (1:02.43) and the 100 breastroke (1:23.71).

The Pioneers dive back into action on November 14 when they host their lone home meet of the season versus Monroe CC and Jamestown CC.  Action is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
