Laundry, the bane of college existence, will be become more environmentally-friendly, if not more enjoyable, at Alfred State College this fall. The largest laundry room on campus in the MacKenzie Complex has been completely updated and the results will fit in nicely with the college’s green initiative.

The update includes the replacement of 30 traditional top-load washers and dryers which were replaced by front-loading models. The new equipment will reduce the amount of water required for each load from 30 gallons to seven gallons. The new machines are more energy-efficient than the previous models, so the college will gain an immediate savings on electrical costs. Because the machines use less water per load, the college should see savings in waste water charges, too.  The front-loaders require less detergent per load, so students will also realize a savings in detergent costs. The new machines need less than one quarter cup of detergent per load. The previous models required one cup of detergent per load.

“We’ve been replacing old washing machines and dryers as needed around campus, but the MacKenzie Complex gave us a great opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to the environment on a large scale,” explained Tom Massara, ACES Executive Director. “The college will gain real savings and students will have reliable, new equipment to help them get through that dreaded laundry task.”

Students in MacKenzie will continue to be able to monitor their laundry tasks using the online monitoring system http://www.laundryview.com.
