Alfred State College sophomore infielder Derek Speaker (Starpoint) has been named to the NJCAA Division II Pre-season All-American 1st team. Speaker is the only representative of Region III in the any of the three teams.
Speaker hit .352 (63 for 179) during the 2007-08 season. He collected 10 doubles, one homerun, and drove in 34 runs. He scored 48 bases and was 37 for 40 on the base paths. He was an All-Region 1st team selection following the spring season.
This fall, Speaker hit .288 (15 for 52) with two doubles and nine RBI. He scored a team high 15 runs and was 10-11 stealing bases.
Speaker has played all over the field during his time wearing the blue and gold spending time at 2B, SS, 3B, OF, and on the mound.
Speaker and the Pioneers are busy preparing for the upcoming spring season which will begin March 14 with the teams annual trip to Cocoa, FL to play at Cocoa Expo.
