The Alfred State College football team capitalized on mistakes as they defeated Brockport JV 21-10 in their 2011 season opener. The Pioneers now have won four straight season openers.
The Pioneers got on the board in the 1st quarter when Greg Hampton (Uniondale) connected with Devin Simmons (Elmira Free) on a 25-yard scoring play. The drive was set up after Brockport botched a punt due to a high snap.
Brockport made it 6-2 a few minutes later when the Pioneers had a punting miscue. The 4th down snap sailed into the endzone and ASC was forced to take the safety.
Neither team could get on the board until the 3rd quarter when a blocked punt by Anthony Turner (Syracuse/Corcoran) set up another touchdown pass from Hampton to Devin Simmons. Their second scoring connection of the day covered 15-yards.
After stopping Brockport on their next possession, Hampton connected with Erik Simmons (Elmira Free) on a 62-yard scoring play that made it 19-2 with 2:16 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
ASC capped their scoring with 8:42 remaining when LeVaunte Dortch (Niagara Falls) broke through the line and recorded a safety.
The Eagles put together a scoring drive along with a two-point conversion in the final minutes of the game to close within 21-10.
Hampton finished 9 for 19 for 154 yards and three scores while Devin Simmons had three catches for 47 yards and Erik Simmons had two catches for 72 yards. Desmond Goode (Johnson Mountain, VA) rushed for 59 yards on 14 carries.
Rory Spain (Tully) and Carl Williams (Greece Olympia) each recorded eight tackles for the Pioneers. Pat McCormick (Hornell) chipped in five while Jaylin Jeffries (Riverhead) was credited with two sacks. Dortch, Thomas Daniels (Bronx/Institute for Collaborative Education), and Antonio Williams (New Haven, CT) each recorded a sack.
Punter Colter Johnson (Warren, PA) also played a key role in the field position game finishing the day with a 43.7 yard average in seven punts. He had a long of 66 yards.
Both teams accumulated 283 yards of offense on the day.
