In their home opener the Alfred State College baseball team swept rival Monroe CC in their first Region III Division II contests of the season.  The Pioneers won the opener 3-2 on a walk-off single and then won the nightcap 10-5.

In their home opener the Alfred State College baseball team swept rival Monroe CC in their first Region III Division II contests of the season.  The Pioneers won the opener 3-2 on a walk-off single and then won the nightcap 10-5.

In the opener, Justin DiCarlo (Oakville, ONT) singled past a diving third basemen in the bottom of the 7th inning to break a 2-2 and propel the Pioneers to the victory.  Brian Ervay (Elmira Southside) started the inning with a double and came around to score following a bunt single by Brian Zimmerman (Frontier) and a intentional walk to Ray Sova (West Genesee).

Karl Kofmel (Ottawa, ONT) was 2 for 4 with a two-run single in 1st inning while Jake Dale (Keshequa) was 2 for 4.  On the mound, Andrew Foster (Mississauga, ONT) didn't allow an earned run in seven innings.  He allowed just four hits (all singles) while striking out five.

In the nightcap, Berto Vargas (Norman Thomas) led the Pioneers 15-hit attack with a pair of homers.  He connected on a three-run shot in the 1st inning and a two-run blast in the 2nd inning.  Sova was 3 for 4 with an RBI while Ryan Barkley (Penn Yan) was 3 for 4.  Kofmel, Ervay, and DiCarlo were all 2 for 4 on the the day.

On the mound Kyle Binder (Hornell) earned the victory.  He pitched 6.1 innings, scattered 12 hits, and allowed three earned runs.  Joe Wallace (Avoca) induced a bases loaded double-play to end the contest.

The Pioneers have now won eight straight and improve to 12-9 (2-0 Region III Division II) on the season.  ASC and MCC (12-13, 0-2 Region III Division II) continue their four game set on Saturday when they meet in Rochester for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
