The Alfred State College baseball inched closer to .500 with a doubleheader sweep of Lehigh Carbon CC on Saturday afternoon.  The Pioneers battled high winds all day as the won the opener 12-2 and the nightcap 5-2 in eight innings.  ASC is now 8-9 on the season.

The Alfred State College baseball inched closer to .500 with a doubleheader sweep of Lehigh Carbon CC on Saturday afternoon.  The Pioneers battled high winds all day as the won the opener 12-2 and the nightcap 5-2 in eight innings.  ASC is now 8-9 on the season.

Ray Sova (West Genesee) connected on a pinch hit double in the 7th inning to send the nightcap into extra innings tied at 1-1.  In the 8th, Brian Zimmerman (Frontier) tripled and scored on a Kenny O'Brien (Norwalk, CT) double to give ASC their first lead.  O'Brien and Berto Vargas (Norman Thomas) scored added some needed insurance runs when they crossed the plate on a two-run triple by Jake Dale (Keshequa).  Dale later would score to give the Pioneers a 5-1 lead.  LCCC plated a run in the bottom of the 8th and had two runners on base but Sova came out of the pen and got the final two outs to end the game.

Dale was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.  Andy Grayson (Mechanicville) tossed 5.1 innings to earn the win.  He allowed seven hits, two earned runs, and struck out three.  He also picked off five runners.  Joe Wallace (Avoca) tossed two scoreless innings to start the game prior to Grayson taking the hill.

In the first game, Vargas and O'Brien led the offensive attack with multiple hit games.  Vargas was 3 for 4 with 4 RBI while O'Brien was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI.  Wallace allowed six hits and two earned runs in five innings of work to earn the win.  He ended the contest with six strikeouts.
