Pioneers Set to Dive into Nationals

Six members of the Alfred State College swimming team will compete this week at the 2011 NJCAA National Championships at the Flickenger Center on the campus of Erie CC.

Six members of the Alfred State College swimming team will compete this week at the 2011 NJCAA National Championships at the Flickenger Center on the campus of Erie CC.

The four-day event will feature athletes from the 21 two-year colleges across the country that have swim programs.  Diving events begin on Wednesday afternoon while the swim events start at 6 p.m.  On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday preliminaries will start at 10 a.m. and finals will start at 6 p.m. with diving sandwiched in between at 1 p.m.

Competing for the Pioneers are Erin Baum (Dryden), Jacob Giglio (Hornell), Tim Guarino (Cornwall), Wade Harrington (Campbell Savona), Josh Stellrecht (Oakfield Alabama), and Ethan Wright (Clyde Savannah).

Baum will compete in the 100 and 200 butterfly, Giglio in the 50, 100, and 200 free, Guarino in the 100 and 200 breast, Harrington in the 100 back and the 1650 free, Stellrecht in the 400 IM and the 100 and 200 back, and Wright in the 200 IM and the 100 and 200 fly.  The men's team will also field a team in all five relays.

Wright led the men's team at the Northeast District Championship by earning All-Region 2nd team honors in the 200 butterfly.
