Pioneers season comes to end after heartbreaking loss

Monroe CC scored two runs in the bottom of the 9th to erase a one-run deficit and win 8-7 over Alfred State in a Region III Division II Tournament contest.  With the loss the Pioneers season comes to an end with a 23-15-1 record while the Tribunes are one win from the Regional title.

Monroe CC scored two runs in the bottom of the 9th to erase a one-run deficit and win 8-7 over Alfred State in a Region III Division II Tournament contest.  With the loss the Pioneers season comes to an end with a 23-15-1 record while the Tribunes are one win from the Regional title.

Alfred led 7-6 heading into the 9th when Matt McGovern singled to lead off.  He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a throwing error.  With Jeff Osler on second, Pat Corrigan delivered a pinch hit game-winning single to end the game.

Alfred State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 2nd inning keyed by a three-run Derek Speaker (Starpoint) homer.  Monroe then bounced back and scored the next six runs on three-run 3rd and 5th innings. 

In the 6th, Kelvin Espinosa (George Washington) drove in Yordis Veras (Newtown) with a RBI ground out to cut the lead to 6-5.  ASC regained the lead in the 7th when Craig Kosnikowski (N. Tonawanda) and Bruno Saraceno (Binghamton) scored on an error.

Veras finished the day 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored while Speaker was 2 for 5 with 3 RBI including his first career homer.  In total, the Pioneers collected 10 hits.

McGovern led Monroe with a 4 for 4 day while Cory Brownstein was 2 for 5 with a two run homer.  Steve Muoio also collected two of the Tribunes 13 hits.

Josh Michalko got the win with 2.1 innings of one hit relief while Andrew Foster (Clarkson, ONT) took the loss.  Foster tossed 3.1 innings of relief and allowed just one earned run and three hits.

The Pioneers finish the 2007-08 season with a combined fall and spring record of 33-21-1
