The Alfred State College baseball team rallied three times in game two of a non-conference doubleheader to salvage a season opening split with Pennsylvania College of Technology.  Penn Tech won the opener 7-1 while A-State won the nightcap 9-8 in eight innings.

The Alfred State College baseball team rallied three times in game two of a non-conference doubleheader to salvage a season opening split with Pennsylvania College of Technology.  Penn Tech won the opener 7-1 while A-State won the nightcap 9-8 in eight innings.

Brian Ervay (Elmira Southside) hit a sacrifice fly that scored Derek Speaker (Starpoint) in the bottom of the 8th inning to lift the Pioneers to a game two victory.  Paulo Colmenares (San Cristobal, Venezuela) had sent the game into extra innings with a two-out RBI single in the 7th inning.  Alfred trailed 5-0 after half an inning, 7-5 heading the bottom of the 6th, and 8-6 heading into the bottom of the 7th.

Karl Kofmel (Ottawa, ONT.) was 2 for 3 while Steve Smith (Hornell) was 2 for 4 with two runs.  Speaker was 1 for 3 with four runs scored, Berto Vargas (Norman Thomas) was 1 for 1 with 2 RBI, and Kenny O'Brien (Norwalk, CT) drove home two runs.

Brent Johnson (Penn Yan) allowed one run in two innings of work to pick up the victory.

In the opener, Penn Tech scored two in the 1st and 2nd to jump out to a 4-0 lead.  They added an insurance run in the 5th and two more insurance runs in the 7th before the Pioneers got on the board in the 7th on a RBI groundout by O'Brien.

Devin Vasquez (New Paltz) was the lone hitter for A-State with multiple hits finishing 2 for 3.  ASC was held to just five singles in the contest.

The Pioneers now shift their focust to Western New York Athletic Conference play next Saturday when they travel to Mercyhurst North East for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with the Saints.
