The Alfred State men's basketball team opened up their 2012-13 season with a 55-45 victory over Broome CC. The Pioneers used a strong first half to build a 32-18 lead and held off the Hornets rally in the 2nd half.

The Alfred State men's basketball team opened up their 2012-13 season with a 55-45 victory over Broome CC.  The Pioneers used a strong first half to build a 32-18 lead and held off the Hornets rally in the 2nd half.


Marquis Chatman (Allen, TX) led the Pioneers with 15 points and eight boards in his collegiate debut.  Jamar White (Laurel, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) also finished in double figures with 12 points.  Tommy Hutson (Brooklyn/Susan McKinney) finished with nine, Sean Nolan (Palmyra Macedon) passed out seven assists and Wade Franklin (Arkport) came off the bench and chipped in four in 12 minutes of play.


The Pioneers shot 46.2% in the first half to build the 14-point halftime lead.  They built their lead to 20 before the Hornets made a rally with ten minutes left to cut the lead to 10 but BCC was unable to get any closer.  Alfred finished the day shooting 40.4% from the field and was 12 for 21 from the foul line.


Lloyd Saunders led Broome with a double-double tallying 20 points and 11 rebounds.  Eddie Stewart came off the bench and had 10 points.  Broome held a 44 to 39 advantage on the boards including a 23 to 11 offensive board advantage.


The Pioneers have nine days before heading to Orange CC on November 10th for their next regular season game. They will battle SUNY Geneseo and SUNY Fredonia in scrimmages in between.
