The Alfred State College wrestling team spent the weekend at Niagara CCC and picked up a dual victory and had three wrestlers place at the Thunderwolves Open.

The Alfred State College wrestling team spent the weekend at Niagara CCC and picked up a dual victory and had three wrestlers place at the Thunderwolves Open.

On Friday evening, Zach Race (Fulton/G Ray Bodley) pinned Domenic Lewis in 1:26 in the final match of the evening to life Alfred to a 29-26 victory over Grand Valley (MI) State in the Niagara Duals.  In earlier matches, James Barlow (Wayland Cohocton) earned a 16-2 victory, Josh Simons (Campbell Savona) pinned Mike Luck in 4:37, and Jose Pagan (Fredonia) and Lucas Cady (Alfred Almond) earned forfeit victories.

At the NCCC Open, Race and Matt Sowers (Whitesboro) earned 5th place finishes and Justin Hunt (Ripley) was 6th. 

  • Race was 3-2 in the heavyweight competition.  He earned two quick pins to advance to the semifinals but fell in his next two matches to fall to the 5th place match.  In the 5th place match he won an 8-6 overtime decision over Chris Minorchick (Penn State Dubois).
  • Sowers fell in his first match at 174 but rebounded to pin Ryan Terwilliger (Penn State Dubois) to advance to the consolation semifinals.  After being tripped up, Sowers rebounded to win the 5th place match with a pin of Eric King (Mercyhurst North East).
  • Hunt won his first two matches at 149 lbs., pin of Steven Rispoldi (Brockport) and a 18-1 tech fall victory over Gabe Unick (Grand Valley), but was unable to keep the momentum going and fell in his next three matches.

Barlow and Simons each were 2-2 on the day as well for the Pioneers.

ASC is returns to the Orvis Activities Center this weekend for their annual home duals event.  They are scheduled to take on Niagara CCC at 7 p.m. on Friday and then will host NCCC, Jamestown CC, Stevens Tech, and SUNY Cobleskill in a dual event beginning at Noon on Saturday.
