The Alfred State College baseball team scored 28 runs and collected 30 hits in a doubleheader sweep, 17-8 and 11-1, of Finger Lakes CC in the team's regular season finale.  The Pioneers will head into this weekend's Region III Division II tournament as the #3 seed with a 26-15 overall record.

The Alfred State College baseball team scored 28 runs and collected 30 hits in a doubleheader sweep, 17-8 and 11-1, of Finger Lakes CC in the team's regular season finale.  The Pioneers will head into this weekend's Region III Division II tournament as the #3 seed with a 26-15 overall record.

In the opener, Joe Wallace (Avoca) was 4 for 5 with 3 RBI while Jake Dale (Keshequa) was 3 for 3 with an RBI.  Kenny O'Brien (Norwalk, CT) was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI, Karl Kofmel (Ottawa, ONT) was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI, and Brian Ervay (Elmira Southside) was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI.  Adalberto Vargas (Norman Thomas) finished 2 for 5 with 2 RBI including his team leading sixth homer of the season.

Ervay earned the win with five innings of work on the mound.  He walked two and struck out four.  Brent Johnson (Penn Yan) got the final six outs.

In the nightcap, Vargas was 3 for 4 with an RBI to pace the 11-hit attack.  Derek Speaker (Starpoint) was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI, Wallace was 2 for 3, and O'Brien was 2 for 2.  Andy Grayson (Mechanicville) allowed just three hits and one run in five innings of work to earn the win.  He walked two and struck out seven Lakers.

The Pioneers will play #2 Monroe CC on Friday in the opening round of the Region III Division II Tournament.  First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Monroe CC.
